Welcome Back Students!

We hope you had a great summer and are excited to start the new academic year! Student and Academic Support Services (SASS) is one of many offices on campus filled with professional and student staff committed to supporting your success here at Evergreen. Within SASS you will find the offices of Academic and Career Advising, First Peoples Multicultural Advising Services, New Student Programs, Access Services for Students with Disabilties, and TRiO Student Success.
SASS is located in Library 2153 and open 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday, with some offices open for extended hours throughout the week. See the Campus Services webpage for more information about our hours and the hours of other services on campus.
The SASS Newsletter will be sent out to the Evergreen community at the start of each month. The newsletter highlights services, opportunities, news, and events we think especially important for you to be aware of throughout the academic year.
We hope you will visit SASS often to stay connected with staff and other students throughout the quarter! Dig Deep!

Queer & Trans Center (QTC) Opening in SASS!

The new Queer & Trans Center (QTC) will be opening in SASS in fall quarter! The QTC strives to be a welcoming, supportive, and nurturing environment for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) students and their allies.  The center will be located in Lib 2147 and will open Week 3. The official opening will be part of a SASS open house event on Wednesday, October 12, from 12:00 to 2:00 pm.
In addition, we are excited to announce Amira Caluya as our new Coordinator for the QTC. Amira will serve as an advisor, advocate, and resource to LGBTQ students and other affinity groups. Amira received their MSW from the University of Michigan and most recently served as the Program Co-Director at Stonewall Youth in Olympia. They bring a wide variety of experiences working with marginalized populations in both higher education and community settings.

Unity Lounge Moves to New Space

Many will note Lib 2147 as the location of the Unity Lounge. The Unity Lounge has served as a community space for many years and is moving just down the hall. It is now located in Lib 2151. Due to construction of a new accessible exterior entrance, it too will open Week 3.
Please note that although these important spaces will not be readily accessible Week 1, students can still come to SASS and meet with staff in First Peoples or the QTC. Students can reach us at firstpeoples@evergreen.edu or call to make an appointment at 360-867-6467.

Exciting Changes in Academic Advising and Career Development!

Over the summer the staff and resources of Academic Advising and the Career Development Center joined to form a new unit called Academic and Career Advising!  Our goal is to provide better coordination of services and support to students as they move through Evergreen and plan for life after graduation.
Advisors and staff will continue to provide the same range of services as before - everything from discussions of your interests and goals (both academic and career), to detailed planning of your programs and courses, support with internships and individual learning contracts, exploring career paths and grad school opportunities, help with resumes and cover letter writing, mock interview practice, and more!
To make an appointment with any of our advisors or to find our drop-in hours, please call 360-867-6312.

New Staff and More Support for Internships

Research shows that doing an internship gives students an edge when it comes to getting establish in their career after graduation.  Evergreen is committed to making internship opportunities available to all students, and to support this we've hired Kevin Andrew as the new Assistant Director for Internships and Employer Relations.  Kevin will be working intensively with employers, both locally and nationally, to develop high-quality internship opportunities, as well as coordinate with Evergreen alumni who are interested in mentoring a student intern.  We'll also be hiring an Internship Coordinator in the near future to provide even more internship support for students and faculty.
The college's Community Opportunities and Internship Fair will be held in late January, but you'll be hearing more from us throughout fall quarter about the importance of internships and how to start finding an opportunity that fits your goals and interests.

Accommodations through Access Services

Access Services provides accommodations for Evergreen students with documented disabilities. Fall quarter is always an exciting time and we look forward to meeting new students and welcoming returning students back to campus.
