SMPA SUMMER RUNDOWN

Please join us for our annual SMPA Kickoff Event on Thursday, September 3, at 6 pm via Zoom. This is an annual gathering that brings us together to say hello, launch the year, and pass along vital information about SMPA-exclusive scholarships and prizes, University updates, internships and job opportunities, and upcoming events. Students will hear from some of our fabulous faculty members and alumni who are leaders in media and politics. 
Please make every effort to join us on Thursday, September 3. This will be a great evening celebrating our strong community of students, faculty, and staff. 

SMPA FIRST-YEAR ORIENTATION 
To ensure a successful start, we invite SMPA first-year students to attend our SMPA First-Year Orientation on Friday, August 14, from 6 – 6:30 p.m. via Zoom. Students will enjoy virtually mixing and mingling with new classmates and meet some of the SMPA student ambassadors. Students will also hear from Director Waisbord about some of the amazing opportunities here and have the chance to ask questions about the SMPA experience.

INTERNSHIPS & JOBS

INTERNSHIP WITH THE TEXAS DEMOCRATIC PARTY 
The Texas Democratic Party is seeking political interns to work remotely for the Texas Democratic Party’s statewide headquarters located in Austin. You will learn about modern political campaigns and play a role in the coordinated campaign effort to elect Democrats up and down the ballot across the entire state of Texas. Interns will be asked to research campaign districts, help create campaign plans, contribute to the communications strategy, and help plan and execute candidate training. Interns will receive a small stipend and must be eligible to receive college credit.

INTERNSHIPS AT THE WILSON CENTER
The Wilson Center's Science and Technology Innovation Program (STIP) is seeking internship applications for the Fall 2020 semester. Internships with STIP are designed to provide the opportunity for practical experience in science and technology in an environment that successfully combines scholarship with public policy. Interns will gain valuable experience in various projects including publication research and preparation, academic research, and administrative assignments in support of both STIP and Wilson Center activities.

JOB OPPORTUNITY AT FINRA
FINRA is looking to hire a senior analyst, digital strategy, corporate communications. The specialist is responsible for developing and writing content across FINRA’s internal and external channels. The specialist will report to the manager, digital strategy, and will manage the digital team’s editorial calendar and maintain FINRA’s voice across channels.

Students will design a strategy for an information and influence campaign. Research on issues and actors, identification of critical decision-making points and key constituencies, development of communication strategies more likely to achieve stated objectives of a campaign.

Students will work in small groups, research and develop full-scale plans for hypothetical, reality-based, strategic communication campaigns that test and apply theoretical advances in the field.
Science Communication (SMPA 3195)

This course teaches the writing, speaking, and visual presentation skills that help scientists communicate their work to the public, to the media, to fellow scientists, to NGOs, and to funding agencies. These skills translate naturally into writing for journals, for grants, and for conference presentations. The class is primarily intended for students in environmental studies, sustainability, and the natural sciences. 
Media, Technology and Culture (SMPA 3476)

Students will learn concepts, principles, and socio-political implications of new and changing media and related technologies. The course will focus on the intersection of new technologies and the anthropology of everyday life, in particular self-governance, policy development, cultural rupture and cohesion, the tension between national security and individual privacy rights, and First Amendment issues.
