The John J. McDonough Museum of Art, Youngstown State University's Center of Contemporary Art, is excited to announce the opening of our fall season with two dynamic exhibitions. Featuring artists who explore landscape as a lens for ecological, social, and political instability, Around Here, It’s Always Eternity includes works by Bonny Leibowitz, Alice Pixley Young, Deborah Wasserman and Etty Yaniv and will be on view August 25-October 24. Also on display from August 25 - December 12 will be the Kilcawley Print Collection comprised of twenty-three original prints by prominent postmodern artists of the 1960s. A reception for both exhibitions takes place on Friday, August 28 from 5-7pm at the McDonough.

Around Here It's Always Eternity

Bonnie Leibowitz's “sprawling floor-based sculptures and installations combine salvaged welded metals, plastics, mangled industrial and architectural parts, tree branches, roots, and photography to examine renditions of environmental stories and histories— all of which have been constructed and distorted by humans. Her installations highlight both the stark contrasts and the blurring of boundaries between the manufactured and the organic.”
Leibowitz is an artist focusing on how nature is intricately intertwined with human culture and technology. She is a recipient of the Nasher Sculpture Center 2024 Artist Grant. Her work has been in both solo and group exhibitions throughout the country from Texas to New York to California. Originally from Philadelphia, Leibowitz lives and works in Dallas, TX.

Born in Washington DC, Alice Pixley Young has created recent multimedia installations for Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Akron Art Museum, and the Sarasota Art Museum. Additionally, her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She is the recipient of numerous grants and her work appears in Sculpture Magazine, Hyperallergic, Artnet News and Condé Nast Traveler. She is a member of A.I.R. Gallery in Brooklyn.
Pixley Young's work “examines her layered environment: culturally the Rust Belt, geologically an ancient fossil bed on the Myaamia homelands, and from now to forever, a nuclear-contaminated site. This informs her multimedia installations which combine vocabularies from the built and natural environments."

Deborah Wasserman relates that “...motherhood profoundly influences her artistic vision, inspiring her to emphasize matriarchal themes of nurturing, healing, and care." Her paintings evoke environmental destruction contrasted with the beauty and fertility of nature.
Wasserman was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, raised in Tel Aviv, Israel, and currently lives and works in NYC. She has exhibited work both nationally throughout New York and internationally in Brazil, he Netherlands, Germany and Israel. Wasserman has been the recipient of multiple grants as well as a is an IAP Social Practice fellowship from NYFA In addition, she is a Finalist for the NYFA Artist Fellowship in the category of Drawing.

Ettty Yaniv "combines paint, fabric, photography, and found objects to create textured, multi-dimensional environments that appear to be in perpetual flux. From a distance, they resemble topographical terrains, as if seen from a bird’s eye view or a satellite. Up close, they reveal intricate vignettes evoking archeological layers, where deep time, life’s brief moments, history, and natural forces entwine. "
Born in Tel Aviv, Israel Yaniv lives and works in the NYC area. She has exhibited installations and paintings in solo and group shows nationally and internationally. Her site-specific installation “Inversion” was exhibited at Palazzo Mora, Art Biennale, Venice, 2022. Her work is in institutional and private collections in the US, Israel, Australia, Europe, and Canada. She founded the online magazine Art Spiel and serves as its chief editor.

Kilcawley Print Collection |

Acquired over several years during the 1970s the Kilcawley Print Collection includes 23 signed and numbered prints by prominent artists of the period including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, and Robert Rauschenberg among others. Dr. Louis Zona who was chair of the Department of Art at the time of its acquisition remarked that the collection "is an enormous source of pride to Youngstown State University for it exemplifies artistic excellence. Represented here are exceptionally high quality, limited edition prints by many of the most influential and historically important artists of our time. Included are principal figures from such major artistic movements as Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Post-painterly Abstraction, and the New Realism."
