As we enter the Lenten season—a time for reflection, renewal, and generosity—we are reminded of our shared responsibility to assist those in need. This year, that call is more urgent than ever.
The demand for one-time emergency assistance has surged to unprecedented levels. After losing critical funding last fall, our homelessness prevention program was drastically reduced, limiting our ability to help those on the brink of eviction. Each week, hundreds of individuals and families—many working in low-wage jobs with no safety net—seek assistance at our locations. It is heartbreaking that most must be turned away. A single unexpected expense, like a car repair or medical bill, can push them into crisis. Recent layoffs by corporate, government, and nonprofit entities have made things even worse.
At the same time, due to an abrupt loss of federal funding, refugee families in our Nashville community, who arrived here legally after extensive vetting, are without essential support. Currently, 125 newly arrived refugees, having fled war and persecution in search of safety, are struggling without the aid our country promised them.
The need is great—for both residents and newcomers alike. Whether it’s a family at risk of losing their home, an older adult without support, or a refugee seeking stability, so many of our neighbors are working to overcome hardship and build a better future. With the right support, they can regain stability and move toward self-reliance.
This Lent, we invite everyone—regardless of faith tradition—to reflect on the importance of kindness and compassion. Inspired by both Old and New Testament teachings, we are all called to care for the most vulnerable. Please join us to answer the call to extend a helping hand to those in crisis.
Will you help uphold the dignity of neighbors in need this Lent?

Catholic Charities on NewsChannel5+
|
On Friday, I had the opportunity to join NewsChannel5's Pat Nolan alongside Phostin Saidi, a former refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo who is now a U.S. citizen working at Catholic Charities. We discussed the devastating impact of the resettlement program’s federal funding cuts. Phostin knows firsthand the struggles refugee families face and the hope that support can bring. These families have gone through extensive legal processes to be here and deserve the chance to build a stable future.

🚲 In-Kind Donation Drive: Give a Bike, Change a Life! 🚲
|
For many, a bike is more than just transportation—it’s a lifeline. It means getting to work on time, accessing groceries, making it to school, or reaching a doctor’s appointment. A new or donated bike can empower someone to move forward, literally and figuratively.
Donate a new bike from our Amazon Wishlist today, or contact Amy Fabian at afabian@cctenn.org to donate a gently-used bike.
