“To the God of my life” the psalmist cries, “Why?”
It’s a kind of offering, perhaps a confession.
Why is my soul heavy? Why, soul, are you so unsettled?
Why, if the Lord grants such love, do I feel forgotten?
If the Lord’s song is with me, why do I feel alone?
Why so burdened if I have been set free?
These three days carry so much remembering.
We remember a supper, and a betrayal.
We remember how acts of service reveal love.
We remember expensive perfume, and promises fulfilled.
We remember an execution and a grave.
In these days, we remember God walking among us.
In this season we hear the stories of God’s people,
Passed down from generation to generation.
We hear the stories of violence, and of loss, and of grief.
We forget these stories, and press repeat.
After all this time, God are you there?
Our lives cry out. Why?
Today we remember our waiting.
We remember what the Spirit reveals.
We remember what God has promised.
We remember what Jesus has said he will do.
The third day is dawning, it’s just beyond the wait.
The one who is our help, and our God remains steadfast.
Why must we wait?
On the other side of this waiting, the Lord greets us with song.
Through the depths of this grief, the Lord answers our cry.
Today we remember God’s story is not of glory,
But a promise of presence, and of peace.
On this other side of today, the living God tells us,
“I am with you”.
This is the answer from the God of our lives.
Prayer: God of the waiting, and God of the why, thank you for your presence through the mountains and the valleys of my life. Help me to trust that your faithfulness meets me in my burdens and in my weariness. Direct my heart to the other side of this day, in eager anticipation to what has been fulfilled. All glory be to the God of my life, revealed through Christ Jesus, and known to me through the gift of the Holy Spirit. Through Jesus, our savior, I pray. Amen.
