Dear Students,
I’m writing to share an important COVID testing update.
Two positive COVID-19 cases identified during last week’s testing protocol have been identified as the highly contagious COVID variant B.1.1.7, which was first identified in the UK. Based on what we know from contact tracing, the cases are not connected. Those who tested positive are staff members who are isolating off-campus.
Our medical advisors tell us dozens of cases of this variant have been found in Shelby County over the last few weeks. Although overall case numbers are diminishing and vaccination efforts are increasing, the presence of this mutation in our community underscores the need for us to be vigilant and continue following all health and safety protocols. According to the CDC, these variants spread more quickly and easily, leading to more cases.
Please remember to stay vigilant about proper masking, social distancing, and symptom monitoring as the semester continues. Our current positivity rate is at 0.3% and our testing and contact tracing protocols continue to allow us to isolate and quarantine those who have tested positive or been in contact with someone who tests positive. However, if we see an uptick in cases, we may have to adopt additional, more stringent regulations.
Our laboratory partners will be doing additional testing on any suspicious positive cases in our campus community to monitor for variant strains.
We will update you if we receive more information about cases related to these variants. Thank you for all you are doing to protect our community.
