Types of Housing at MSU
Each of our five on-campus neighborhoods offers unique housing opportunities in our many residence halls. Below are some of the types of housing available.
If you have any questions or need further information about the options below, please don't hesitate to reach out to the Housing Assignments Office at 517-884-5483 or liveon.msu.edu.

Substance-Free Housing
Substance-free floors are spaces in which residents agree all forms of drugs and alcohol will not be brought into the area, even by persons 21 years of age or older. While MSU is already a drug-free campus, and most on-campus residents are not of age to drink alcohol, this housing option supports students who want to maintain a substance-free lifestyle. Substance-free housing is located in Abbot and Mason halls, near MSU's Collegiate Recovery Community. Incoming students who would like to live in Substance-Free Housing will complete the interest form in their My Housing account during the preference process.

Gender-Inclusive Housing
Gender-inclusive housing (GIH) means that, in select spaces, students from all gender identities and expressions may choose to live together. Incoming students who would like to live in GIH will complete the Gender-Inclusive Housing Form in their My Housing account during the preference process.

Transgender Residential Experience
The Transgender Residential Experience, or TREx, is a dedicated living space designed specifically for transgender and nonbinary students who seek an inclusive and affirming housing environment. This option allows students to share a double room in South Neighborhood, providing an opportunity for mutual support, understanding and community-building.
We recognize the importance of providing housing options that cater to the diverse needs of our student population. TREx aims to create a space where transgender and nonbinary students can feel comfortable expressing themselves freely while living in a supportive community. Students interested in living in TREx will apply in their My Housing account during the preference process.

Dietary Housing
Dietary Housing offers students with food allergies the option to reside in close proximity to Thrive Dining Hall. It's important to note that selecting Dietary Housing means you will be situated near Thrive, though not necessarily matched with an allergen-conscious roommate. Students interested in Dietary Housing will complete the application in their My Housing account, and then they will be asked to provide the necessary documentation.

Living-Learning Communities
Students who are in a Residential College or Living-Learning Community (LLC) have specific housing locations, and all LLCs require their students to have roommates in the same LLC. When using My College Roomie, you will need to self-filter for students within your LLC.
Please visit the LLC Guidelines page for full details on housing locations and roommate rules.

Housing Forms
Every incoming student is required to submit the Housing Preferences and Dining Plan form in My Housing. Students who want to live with specific roommates need to complete the Roommate Group to create or accept a group invitation. Forms for other housing options are available throughout the housing preference period, which closes June 12. Learn more about housing assignments at liveon.msu.edu/new-residents.
