Growing up in a small town two and a half hours east of Arlington called Dangerfield, Ami Patel knew she didn’t want to go very far for school, but also wanted to study somewhere where she knew she could receive a quality education.
“I attended UTA since the distance was doable, but I also heard the CONHI program was great,” said Patel.
With aspirations to one day specialize in infectious diseases, Patel knew she made the right choice coming to The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). Now, she is an alumna, having completed her bachelor’s in public health this spring.
“I am wanting to become an epidemiologist or an infection disease specialist. Currently I am aiming to get my master's in public health at UTA,” Patel added. “I [was] also an undergraduate researcher for the social determinants of health lab at UTA, vice president for [the student organization] Mavericks for Public Health, and a co-founder of the Texas Public Health Association chapter at UTA.”
Additionally, Patel secured an internship to help her gain crucial experience in the field.
“I got an internship at The YMCA doing a community health internship in Fort Worth,” said Patel. “It was all thanks to Dr. Becky Garner inviting Mayte Martinez as a guest speaker that I was able to connect with her and start my internship.”
With her degree in hand, Patel reflects on her time as an undergraduate student.
“During my time in public health, I gained so much knowledge, connections, skills, leadership opportunities, and passion. Public health to me is a great career path and I am glad I got to share the same dream as my peer,” Patel said. “All of the professors are committed to helping their students succeed and integrate proactiveness into their courses… I especially enjoyed leading Mavericks for Public Health and making new relationships that will last a long time.”

Tiffany Kindratt, assistant professor in the Public Health program, spoke with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram about the new U.S. Census category on race and ethnicity, Middle Eastern or North African (MENA). Kindratt says the new category can help address disparities and identify solutions for health care aimed at people who identify as MENA. Yahoo! News also shared this story.
The UTA College of Nursing and Health Innovation unveiled its new Igloo Vision Immersion Room on April 29, reported the Fort Worth Report, NBC 5 News and Fox 4 News. The simulation system will allow nursing students to immerse themselves into various training scenarios to hone their educational skills.
The body’s natural resilience starts to break down in a person’s third or fourth decade, UTA professor of nursing Marco Brotto told Prevention Magazine. He recommends daily stretching and balance work to increase flexibility.
