In this talk, he will discuss his experience as a fellow and how the library's resources supported his current research project, "Stepchildren of the Shtetl: The Destitute, Disabled, and Demented of Jewish Eastern Europe."

Join us for an evening reception including light refreshments from Broder Söder, a gallery talk, and a chance to dive into this epic humanitarian story of bravery and risk. 
Supporters of the nonprofit cultural center Nordic Northwest, members of the New Sweden Cultural Heritage Society, and PSU's Harold Schnitzer Family Program in Judaic Studies have collaborated to present a Scandinavian Havdalah ceremony to celebrate the end of Shabbat in honor of the exhibit opening.

Chavruta: Drummer's Bat Mitzvah is a 16-minute documentary short by Jodi Darby. The film follows two Jewish Portland artists, drummer/writer/environmentalist Lisa Schonberg and musician/writer/Jewish educator Alicia Jo Rabins, as they prepare for Lisa's adult bat mitzvah. The word chavruta refers to the traditional partner-style study of Jewish texts; over the course of one year, the two women delve into a grassroots, feminist, distinctly Portland course of study. They explore the intersections of Torah, performance, and the artist's path; they investigate the ancient Near Eastern roots of women's drumming, ancient goddess traditions, and the place of environmentalism in religion. At its core, Chavruta is a film about everyday spiritual quests: the search for personal, authentic ways to express our Judaism; the importance of continuing to ask, learn and grow as adults; and the power that lies in chavruta

Enter the world of Anne Frank as told by her stepsister and childhood friend, Eva Schloss. At 8 years old Eva became friends with Anne, playing hopscotch and drinking lemonade together. Her story is difficult to imagine, yet it reminds us that the power of good is immeasurable and that love makes a difference. Doors to the seating will open at 7pm. Students and Seniors (62+) save 20% on tickets.
