SMPA Mourns the Loss of Cokie Roberts, Wife of Professor Steven Roberts
Faculty, staff and students at the School of Media and Public Affairs are mourning the loss of Professor Steven Roberts' beloved wife of 53 years, Cokie Roberts.
Cokie impacted and touched many lives. An overwhelming number of SMPA faculty, alumni, and students have reflected on their memories of Cokie and her marriage that inspired so many.

SEPTEMBER 23
PARIS FOR SPRING BREAK INFORMATION SESSION
Professor Lee Huebner is holding an information session for his course, “Globalization and the Media" (SMPA 3195) and the Spring Break Paris Seminar.
The information session will be held in SMPA 511 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 23. If you cannot attend please email questions and suggestions to Professor Huebner at huebner@gwu.edu or see him in his office, room 511 of SMPA during his office hours on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 6:00 pm. You can also schedule an appointment at another convenient time for you. 
Applications for the class must be submitted by October 15 through the Columbian College of Arts & Sciences. Successful applicants will be enrolled into the course. 
SEPTEMBER 27
SMPA INAUGURAL FRIDAY FUN WORKSHOPS 
The workshops are free for undergraduates and graduate students and provide opportunities to learn and practice fundamental camera and Adobe Creative Cloud techniques outside of courses. The next session, on Basic Adobe Premiere Workflows, will be on September 27 from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. in SMPA 510.

Know someone interested in transferring into SMPA? GW sophomores in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (CCAS) are eligible to apply.
The Spring 2020 admission deadline is Friday, October 4 at 11:59 pm.

GW iGEM is a undergraduate-led program aimed towards the revolution of genetic engineering to solve tomorrow's problems and compete in the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition. They are seeking students to join thier marketing and communications team. Email gwigem@gwu.edu with any questions. 
SEPTEMBER 29
APPLY FOR GW ALTERNATIVE BREAKS
The student-led program features 11 trips that provide students the opportunity to become active citizen leaders while building lasting connections with people from various communities. Each trip has its own unique service area and pre-trip education meetings allow students to become informed about the community and issue area they will be working with.

BEA SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIZES
BEA is awarding over $50,000 in scholarships & $25,000 in cash prizes for undergraduate and graduate students. 
OCTOBER 15
APPLY FOR THE MANHEIM-STERLING UNDERGRADUATE RESERACH PRIZE
The Manheim-Sterling Undergraduate Research Prize is designed to support and encourage outstanding mentored undergraduate research and creative work. SMPA awards two prizes each academic year, one for a Political Communication major and one for a Journalism and Mass Communication major. The 2018-19 Manheim-Sterling Prize Recipients were Grant Sobetski and Jack Nassetta. The application deadline is Tuesday, October 15 at 11:59 pm.

Dante Chinni co-authored the article “Slow Growth Hasn’t Hurt Trump in Key Midwest Counties” for The Wall Street Journal.
The 2019 Institute for Documentary Filmmaking students won an Award of Merit in the Best Shorts Competition for their film, “ALL THE RAGE.”

MARCH ON WASHINGTON FILM FESTIVAL
The March on Washington Film Festival will be hosting several events and movie screenings and discussions all around the DC area, with many events on the GW campus in the Jack Morton Auditorium!
Tickets to many screenings are $5, and SMPA’s Dr. Imani M. Cheers will be moderating a few events!
