The Gardener Who Knew Too Much
Puzzler time.
We’re in the English countryside. Fog, hills, bad tea—you know the place. A wealthy gentleman, Sir Richard Ashcroft, is found dead at the bottom of a rocky slope. His bicycle is wrecked beside him.
Everyone says: tragic accident.
Some whisper: suicide.
Enter Inspector Lestrade… and one key witness: Nigel, the loyal gardener.
Nigel finally speaks and says:
He saw Sir Richard riding fast down a hill, sitting upright… when suddenly he jerked the handlebars to the left, flew off the road, and died.
He claims Sir Richard told him beforehand he planned to take his own life—and begged him to keep it secret.
Later, over a civilized drink, Sherlock Holmes hears the story and immediately says:
“Bring in the gardener. He’s the killer.”
The question is simple:
How did Holmes know Nigel was lying?
