of Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Economic Development |

Dear alumni, students, faculty and staff:
|
Does greater efficiency really mean less use? Historically, no. This is Jevons Paradox: as resources become more efficient, total use rises because they grow more valuable and embedded in the economy—an effect accelerating with AI. At Kummer College, where engineering, technology and business converge, we see Jevons Paradox not as a problem to avoid, but as a driving force of the modern economy.
Through the integration of our Engineering Management, Systems Engineering and Economics departments, we are pioneering a hybrid model of education. We move beyond traditional sustainability models that focus on constraints; instead, we embrace efficiency as a catalyst for economic expansion and productivity gains.
Partnering with the S&T community, we lead global investment across three frontiers: deep and hard tech building future infrastructure; hyper-automation transforming physical and digital systems; and life sciences and biomedical engineering advancing automated diagnostics and therapeutics.
Building on S&T’s 155-year legacy as an innovation “foundry,” Kummer College is shaping a new paradigm—preparing students not just to witness the future, but to build and own it.

S&T and community members unite through Rolla LOOP |
|
|
Two friends once shared a dream: to create a space where entrepreneurs and community members could connect, collaborate and grow Rolla together.
That dream became the Rolla LOOP, a monthly gathering supported by S&T’s Kummer College and started by “the Rachels” — Dr. Rachel Kohman, assistant dean of entrepreneurship education at S&T; and Rachel Jung, S&T alumna and director of project management at Brewer Science, who also runs the social media brand “Uncover Rolla.”
“Jung and I knew that the best way to create an entrepreneurship ecosystem was through a casual convening of entrepreneurs, resources and innovative thinkers,” Kohman says. “We wanted it to be a partnership across the community, but we also have people from St. Louis, Springfield and Columbia who have been showing interest.”
