SCPA is here for you

After 20 years with SCPA, there is a basic rhythm to our schedule throughout the year that seems familiar to me. Things regularly change in our industry and we have tried to always adapt to those changes, but that basic rhythm has always seemed consistent. Well, the past month has totally changed the rhythm in our offices – as I am sure it has in your offices as well.
One thing that has not changed, however, is our desire to help you in any way possible. Your needs may be different now than they were two months ago, but we still want to help you meet them if we can. If your issue involves something we have not dealt with we will do our best to reach out to someone that can assist – or if your issue is similar enough to issues others are facing we might just set up a Zoom meeting or conference call to discuss the topic with other members.
A couple of weeks ago, we had a virtual roundtable for editors and we plan to have similar sessions on other topics in the coming weeks as well. We’re all in this together. So, please reach out if you need help.

Post and Courier prison investigation wins NLA First Amendment Award

The Post and Courier has received a top honor in the prestigious News Leaders Association Awards for its coverage of a 2018 killing spree that left seven inmates dead and dozens more severely wounded inside a maximum-security South Carolina prison.
The annual NLA Awards recognize distinguished writing, digital storytelling and photography from across the continent.
The Post and Courier received the NLA’s First Amendment Award for ”‘IT’S TIME FOR YOU TO DIE’: How flaws in the SC prison system led to seven deaths in a single night.” Other winners included The Miami Herald, the Los Angeles Times, ProPublica, The Baltimore Sun and The New York Times.
The April 15, 2018 riot at Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville marked America’s deadliest prison violence in a quarter century. Yet more than a year after the bloodshed, the public had been told little about what transpired that night or the events that preceded the violence. Read more.

Weeks into the coronavirus pandemic, here are some tools that are actually worth using

… Ariel Zirulnick recently highlighted creative live online event approaches in her terrific piece about how 15 membership-based news organizations are adapting to the coronavirus. To explore how these kinds of news organizations build loyalty, check out the European Journalism Accelerator’s database of 145 community-driven news organizations. You can filter it by revenue stream, country, or engagement approach.
Some creative news organizations are leaning on services like GroundSource and Subtext to address readers’ coronavirus questions through text messaging. 150,000 people are getting COVID-19 text updates from more than a dozen news organizations using Subtext. They’re riding a broader trend: A recent M+R study noted that audiences for nonprofit text messaging grew by 26% in 2019. That growth came even as Facebook audiences grew by just 4% and email list sizes declined by 2%.

Fallout: As Coronavirus Wipes out ad dollars, will the news industry recover?

On April 1, Gannett, the nation’s largest newspaper chain and owner of USA Today and 260 other daily publications, announced it was implementing pay cuts and furloughs across the company as the coronavirus pandemic forced businesses to close and local advertising to plummet.
Lee Enterprises, which operates newspapers in 25 states, announced the executive team would take a 20 percent reduction in the third quarter, while all other employees would be subjected to either a pay reduction or furlough equivalent to two weeks of salary.
After announcing bankruptcy in February, McClatchy, owner of 30 U.S. newspapers, revealed in April it would furlough about 115 employees, while CEO Craig Forman would take a 50 percent pay cut. Several executive positions were also eliminated.

Advertising is a problem-solving business

When I heard the doorbell ring that Saturday afternoon, I did something I had never done before. I bought something from a door-to-door salesperson.
It was a pest control representative who was canvassing the neighborhood for new business. The logo on his bright green golf shirt matched his truck in the driveway. He introduced himself and said, “I see you have a vole problem. Have you tried anything?”
“How do you know there’s a vole problem?” I asked.
“When I got out of the truck, I noticed the spongy ground next to the driveway. That’s an obvious sign.”
In just a few seconds, he had identified a problem. Obviously, he knew what he was doing. “You’re right,” I said. “We’ve had voles in our yard for several years. A company has been working on the problem, but that doesn’t seem to be helping.” Read more.
