Annual Student Employee Awards

Each year, Recreation & Wellness holds an annual Student Employee Recognition event to thank our nearly 130 student staff, congratulate our seniors, and celebrate another successful year. While this year's event was moved to virtual celebrations, recognizing our student leaders is still as important as ever. Our student employees are the backbone of what we do, and without them, we wouldn't be who we are. To our seniors, we will miss you and know you will have a great impact on the world. To the rest of our staff, thank you for your contributions; we look forward to all we can do in the future.
Director's Award: ALEX SIXT.
Alex has been an asset to the entire RecWell department. She is a Marketing Team member, Group Exercise Instructor, and Red Shirt Drill Leader! She is also a Resident Assistant for Housing & Residence Life. Alex has been the driving force behind most of the social media content over the last year, and she has helped improve our students’ experiences in so many ways. In addition to planning and being present at many events, her passion for fitness is evident in many of her group exercise classes. As an instructor, Alex is known for teaching a variety of land formats with an amazing amount of energy, creativity, and fun! She is always smiling, willing to help anyone, passionate about what she does, and a great leader. Thank you for going above and beyond, Alex!
Fitness & Wellness Employee of the Year: CARA SMITH.
Since joining our team in Winter 2019, Cara continues to be a tremendous asset! She is a Fitness Specialist, and a founding member and Lead Instructor for LIFT. Cara has a great passion for sharing her knowledge, creating fun and challenging workouts and inspiring others to be their best selves.
Marketing Team Employee of the Year: ABBY COOPER.
Abby has been a Designer with RecWell for the last 3 years, starting in her first year at GVSU. She has put her mark a majority of the department’s programs, services, and initiatives. She is a great team player, her positive attitude is contagious, and we are so thankful for the creativity she brings to our department!
Outdoor Adventures Employee of the Year: LOUIS VIEREGGE.
As a Climbing Center staff member for the last year, Louis has a contagious passion for outdoor and adventure-based recreation. When he’s not mentoring new climbers and route setters or teaching various climbing classes, you’ll probably find him energetically participating in other OA or RecWell programs.
Sports Programs Employee of the Year: BRYCE MULLER.
As a Sports Programs Supervisor, Official, and Office Assistant, Bryce’s strength as a leader is his ability to connect with all participants and coworkers. He has grown immensely over the last four years, and we know that he will be a leader wherever he goes!
