Q: Rebel Girls "introduces girls to diverse stories of extraordinary women from the past and present.” What inspired you to focus on publishing these stories? Why do you believe it is so important to introduce girls to these stories at a young age?
A: A study in the journal Science showed that 6-year-old girls are less likely than boys to think members of their own gender can be brilliant — and they’re more likely than boys to shy away from activities requiring that exceptional intelligence. This is a change from their attitudes at age 5, when they’re just as likely as boys to think their own gender can be brilliant, and just as willing to take on those activities for brilliant children. Rebel Girls’ mission is to help raise the most confident and inspired global generation of girls. Through storytelling we inspire girls to become the stars of their own story and we ask them to be the heroes of tomorrow. Rebel Girls is not only providing girls with inspiration, we are also a community that supports them, celebrates them and cheers for them.
Q: What's one of your favorite stories that you've been able to share in your Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls series?
A: The story of Mary Anning is fascinating and one of my favorites. Mary was a self-taught fossil collector and paleontologist who made incredible discoveries just steps away from her own home.
Q: Your forthcoming title, Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Real-Life Tales of Black Girl Magic, has a special launch event around International Day of the Girl! What are a few of the activities you have planned for this event?
A: Rebel Girl Fest will theme segments around four main pillars: Leader, Creator, Champion and Innovator. We are excited to reveal our line-up later in the Summer.
Q: Can you elaborate on who is a “Rebel Girl”, or what makes someone a “Rebel Girl”?
A: A Rebel Girl is bold, kind, and confident who is authentically themself and strives to be a knowledgeable and curious global citizen.
Q: In addition to your print books, Rebel Girls produces a popular podcast. How do the books and podcast work together?
A: Our publishing and audio teams both elevate and amplify stories of empowering and inspiring women. There are instances, including with Rebel Girls Champions and Black Girl Magic, where the subjects and themes align. Outside of those larger moments, they equally inspire and empower via storytelling and support Rebel Girls effort to engage with girls across multiple mediums.
