Inclusion, Diversity, Belonging, Equity, and Access @ Wagner // October 2024

October is LGBTQ+ History Month, with several noteworthy dates: National Coming Out Day (October 11); the anniversary of the first march for gay rights in Washington on October 14, 1979; Spirit Day acknowledging LGBTQ+ youth (October 19); and Asexual Awareness Day (October 26). And October 14 marks Indigenous Peoples’ Day. This nationally recognized holiday observes and honors the diverse history of indigenous peoples’ culture and Native American people.

Please join us in celebrating history and community, as well as working towards service and action as we highlight the continued IDBEA work at Wagner.

STONEWALL POLICY ALLIANCE (SPA)

The Stonewall Policy Alliance (SPA) increases the Wagner community’s knowledge and understanding of issues affecting the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Queer-identified (LGBTQ+) community. SPA does this by facilitating productive dialogue, promoting alliances, and fostering partnerships between other LGBTQ+ organizations both within NYU and throughout the greater NYC area. Through these activities, SPA fosters an environment that allows the Wagner community and other outside stakeholders to think critically about issues of identity and diversity and to work towards a more inclusive approach to public service. Ultimately, SPA is building a core community for the next generation of queer policymakers and deciders.

Stay up to date with SPA on Instagram and learn how of upcoming events and how to get involved with the group. There is also still time to join the SPA Executive Board, submit your application by Friday October 4!

Alvin Irby (MPA 2015), NYU Wagner Alum

Alvin Irby, founder of Barbershop Books, has been named an NYU Alumni Changemaker of the Year for his work increasing literacy among Black boys through neighborhood barbershops.
