Intensive Care Follow-up Clinic adds enhanced coordinated care and treatment pilot |
The Intensive Care Follow-up Clinic at Children’s Minnesota ensures that graduates from neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) who are most at risk for developmental and health challenges later in life have a structure to support them and refer them to additional services as needed. The Intensive Care Follow-up Clinic also empowers The Kid Experts® at Children’s Minnesota to assess the long-term outcomes of the care of these babies by seeing children through age 5, ensuring appropriate referrals for at-risk infants and toddlers.
What’s new
In 2025, the Intensive Care Follow-up Clinic strengthened its partnership with physical therapy for the youngest patients to increase screening for motor delays and provide earlier referrals for at-risk infants. “We are currently planning a pilot project, which will launch this month, for earlier follow-up with patients with complex discharge plans to support the transition from NICU to home,” said Heidi Kamrath, DO, medical director of neonatal outpatient clinic services.
“Our highly skilled and experienced team collaborates with primary care providers,” said Dr. Kamrath. “It makes referrals to additional specialists to ensure that all babies get off to a successful start after they graduate from the NICU and other neonatal units. We track outcomes for these patients to continually improve care and ensure that our sites can participate in exciting research locally and in the larger neonatal community nationwide.”

Study: Kid experts find universal newborn cCMV screening detects hearing loss earlier |
A new study led by The Kid Experts® at Children’s Minnesota found that universal screening for congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV), the leading non-genetic cause of hearing loss in infants, significantly increased diagnoses of mild hearing loss in infants.
The study, published in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, the peer-reviewed journal of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Foundation, examined 132 patients diagnosed with cCMV between 2021 and 2024. It revealed that universal screening for cCMV:
- Reduced screening age from 8.5 months to 25 days
- Increased the number of diagnoses from about three per year before 2022 to 61 per year after Minnesota became the first state to mandate universal screening in 2023
- Identified four times as many cases of mild hearing loss compared to the prior year
“If we can identify these patients earlier and intervene, we can have a positive impact on them for their entire lives,” said the lead researcher, Andrew Redmann, MD, pediatric otolaryngologist at Children’s Minnesota. “It also allows us to potentially treat their viral infection early on in life with anti-viral medicines and stop potential future hearing loss.”

cCMV screening is offered through audiology services that are provided by the ear, nose and throat (ENT) program at Children’s Minnesota. The program provides a full range of ENT and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery services, including prenatal counseling, advanced imaging, cochlear implants and innovative surgeries for cleft and craniofacial issues.
