Healthy Eating Habits for the Holidays
Annie Loyd, MPH, Dietetic Intern
For many, the holiday season is a time for family, friends and food. With holiday parties and family gatherings, many individuals find themselves over-eating and over-indulging in food. According to the National Institutes of Health, the average American gains one to two pounds during the holiday season. While this may seem small, research has shown that over the years the average individual puts on excess weight that is hard to lose. Healthy eating habits can help you enjoy delicious food and the holiday season without over-indulging and putting on pounds!
You can have healthy holiday eating habits without missing out on your favorite holiday treats. On days when big meals or gatherings are planned, do not skip meals. Skipping meals may result in overeating. Fill up with fruits and vegetables before choosing indulgent foods. High fiber foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains can keep you feeling full and content. Choose smaller portions and use smaller plates when possible. Most importantly, eat slowly, savor every bite, and enjoy conversation at the dinner table! The holidays are a time to celebrate family, friends, and loved ones. Being active is a great way to spend time with good company. After meals, go on a walk or play outside to get some physical activity. These habits do not have to come all at once! Choose one strategy to work on at a time. By the end of the holidays, you will feel healthy without the added weight!
