HR Transformation Updates

New Recruitment Process Update

Since the "Transforming the Employee Recruitment Process" event in late February, Human Resources has been working diligently with campus partners to develop a new hiring process that will decrease the amount of time from application to hire by 50%. The new process is structured into three stages and consists of specific steps in each stage. We are excited to announce the anticipated launch date for the new hiring process is late May.
Before the official launch, we invite you to review the new process via the Recruitment Process webpage. Additional standardized operating procedures and tools will be added to the webpage.

New Total Rewards Operations Center

Human Resources recently created the Total Rewards Operations Center (TROC), which evolved from a merger among Payroll, Benefits and Wellness, and HR Administration and Technology. We believe this merger will drive much-needed synergies and efficiencies, and will help eliminate gaps between our shared operations.
Total Rewards will drive much of the Human Resources operations. By integrating Payroll into the Human Resources business model, we are improving communications between these closely related functions and exploring areas to streamline and improve our current processes and services. All Human Resources functions and team members will continue to work together to create a cohesive unit and provide all GVSU employees with a world-class experience.
Please visit our HR Transformation webpage for updates about our transformation progress.

2022-2023 Performance Evaluation Cycle Launching May 9

We will be launching reviews for the 2022-2023 performance evaluation cycle on May 9. Employees will receive an email notification to login and begin entering their goals, job responsibilities, and professional development planning for the upcoming review year.
Training videos and other helpful guides and information can be found on the Performance Management Toolkit webpage in preparation for the upcoming cycle. There are individual training sessions for each staff and supervisor group. Anyone new to using the system can review the training videos, guides, and additional resources to get started.
If you have any questions, please refer to the Performance Management FAQs or reach out to GV Performance Management at perfmgmt@gvsu.edu.

Form I-9 Update

As in the past, you must complete a new Form I-9 when a hire takes place. However, if you are rehiring an employee within three years of the date of the employee’s previous Form I-9, you do not need to fill out a new form.
If you determine that the employee was terminated and is now rehired, and the rehire occurs within three years from the date the original Form I-9 was completed, you have an option to complete a new form or rely on the original form.

Alex Priebe, Assistant Director of Digital Engagement and Communications, Alumni Relations

After so many in-person events were canceled due to the pandemic, Alex Priebe came up with the idea to coordinate a cornhole tournament on campus. “I missed those opportunities to connect with colleagues from across campus over fun, shared activities, especially outside in the summer,” he said. “At the same time, I was working in Brooks College and we had just created our own custom cornhole boards. My teammate, Aubrey Dull, and I had the idea to start the GVSU Cornhole Tournament as a fun, safe way to bring folks together to build community and connection across campus.”
Once the tournament was in motion, Priebe received support from all over the university. “The Web Team gave us a URL and space to create a webpage. The Human Resources office helped us with organization, communications, and their student designer created graphics. Event Services helped with the location and supplies. Athletics lent us their cornhole boards, as did many colleagues from across campus,” Priebe said. “It was a campus-wide team effort and so fun to see it come together to make something new happen. The best part was hanging out with colleagues from across campus, meeting new faculty and staff members, laughing, sweating (it was nearly 90 degrees that day!) and playing a backyard game together.”
The way the tournament came together nicely illustrates Priebe’s experience at GVSU, which he says is all about the wonderful people and supportive community we have here. In both roles he has worked at on campus, Priebe said, “I’ve felt so supported, encouraged, and cared for. And beyond my team, whenever I reach out to another department for help, someone is always there to show me the way and share their knowledge and resources. If that weren’t true, there’s no way we could have pulled off the Cornhole Tournament. The longer I’m here, the more people I get to know, the more grateful I am to be a Laker. GVSU is such a special place, and I feel lucky to get work here each day.”

Collecting Data on Employee Recruitment and Retention Efforts

A CUPA-HR Survey

We know that one of the most pressing issues facing higher education today is recruitment and retention. CUPA-HR is conducting a survey of higher education employees to better understand why they may or may not be thinking of looking for employment opportunities elsewhere. The survey takes around 10 minutes to complete, and all responses are completely confidential.
