The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and Simons Foundation are partnering to support novel research on the origin of the eukaryotic cell. This major transition in the history of life, estimated to have occurred almost two billion years ago, remains an important yet unsolved puzzle in the biological sciences. We seek to support the international scientific community to explore why and how this symbiotic event occurred by conducting experiments that illuminate or eliminate possibilities regarding the events that led to the emergence of eukaryotes. Award amounts are not pre-determined, and budgets should reflect project needs. Projects will be funded for a maximum of three years.

UC Santa Barbara has been invited to nominate a candidate for the Mellon Foundation's New Directions Fellowship. Designed to promote interdisciplinary or cross-disciplinary research, this program assists early and mid-career faculty in the humanities and humanistic social sciences whose research interests call for formal training in a discipline other than the one in which they are expert.  Faculty members who received their doctorate between 2007 and 2013 are eligible.

Faculty interested in being nominated may submit a Letter of Intent via Competition Space by July 29, 2019.  

Faculty from Southern California colleges and universities may apply for the following grants to be used in France during the summer of 2020 and academic year 2020-21. Interested faculty should contact Janice Taylor in Foundation Relations if interested in applying.

The Foundation offers grants combining (a) a stipend of $30,000 for research in France for a semester (or quarter) during academic year 2020-21, plus (b) accomodations in the Château—with all furnishings provided and utilities paid—as a home base for the research and/or writing up the research findings. Out of academic and practial considerations, candidates should be on sabbatical leave. The Foundation expects a scholarly publication to derive from the grant.

The Foundation offers grants of $35,000 to academics to organize and direct 3-day international coloquia in their academic fields at the Château de la Bretesche in the summer months of 2020. The Foundation funds severla every summer. They should be small in size, with participants equally divided between Americans and Europeans. The Foundation expects grantees to publish the proceedings.
