Warriors in Wakanda
Black History Month concluded with a red-carpet event on Feb. 27: “Warriors in Wakanda - A Celebration of Black History.” Students were encouraged to wear their best Wakanda-inspired attire as they immersed themselves in a cultural oasis, enjoying African drummers and a Wakanda photo station. The celebration concluded with a showing of “Black Panther” in the Magee-O’Connor Theater.
International Women’s Week
The Office of Diversity & Inclusion and Student Life brought International Women’s Week celebrations to Indiana Tech’s campus this week. Activities included a motivational message from Capture Sports Agency founder and Indiana Tech alum Chauntiel Smith, a recognition ceremony of some Indiana Tech women who exemplify the Warrior spirit and a social media takeover by students, faculty and staff posing in a “balanced” stance to demonstrate their support of #balanceforbetter. Check out Indiana Tech’s social media channels for some pictures from the week.
Athletics
Our men’s track and field team won its fifth NAIA indoor national championship in six years, while the women’s team finished third. Fifty-four athletes in all competed for the Orange and Black. Kejavon Moore (60 meters), Leondra Correia (60-meter hurdles) and Destiny Copeland (long jump) won individual national titles for the Warriors.
Our wrestling team repeated as Sooner Athletic Conference champions and sent 12 wrestlers to the NAIA championship in Des Moines, Iowa. The team finished fourth, led by national championship finishes from seniors Erique Early (133-pound class) and Sawyer Miller (125-pound class).
Congratulations to the Indiana Tech men’s and women’s basketball teams for winning their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championship tournaments last week! Both teams advanced to their respective NAIA national tournaments this week. Despite a valiant effort, the men’s team was defeated in a first-round matchup with Spring Arbor. The women won their first and second round games, advancing to play in the quarterfinals tomorrow at 2:00pm. Go Warriors!
The men’s hockey team closed out the regular season with a 23-game winning streak and begin tournament play this weekend in the first round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament.
Tips for a Safe Spring Break
Chris Dickson, Associate Vice President of Student Services
Spring Break is approaching and your son or daughter may be coming home to visit for the week. However, they might be planning a little trip during that time. If that is the case, we want them to have fun, but we also want them to be safe. I encourage you to help your student prepare for their trip by discussing some important safety tips.
1) Be active: It’s easy to take the week and do as little as possible. However, urge them to mix in physical activity during the trip. It will help with sleeping better and maintaining muscle strength and physical condition, especially for athletes who have a week away from team practices.
2) Plan out the details: Is your son or dauther traveling during spring break? Urge your student to spend some time considering the choice of destination and other important questions, like: What items will I need? If I take regular medication, will I have enough for the trip? What will the weather be like there?
3) Avoid risks: Reminding your student to avoid high-risk activities during their spring break trip to reduce the chance of unintentional injuries.
4) Protect your eyes: If your son or daughter wears glasses or contacts, remind them to pack spares as well as supplies for cleaning or repairs.
5) Protect yourself from the sun: Remind your student to wear sunscreen (SPF15 minimum) and to have sunglasses available.
6) Eat healthy: It’s possible to find healthy meals, even while traveling on spring break. Urge your student to eat a variety of foods and maintain a balanced diet, and to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
7) Stay in contact: It’s not a bad thing to simply agree on a text, Facebook message or some other form of communication at the end of each day to simply say, “I’m okay and having fun.”
