| A Message from Geneva Henry, Vice Provost for Libraries and Information Technology |
|
|
As the summer comes to an end, we would like to highlight the progress we have made on several key projects this summer.
|
- Replaced the 16 different networking distribution nodes across campus.
- GW IT worked with our campus partners to schedule each replacement.
- Dates were completed on weekends and negotiated between departments for what worked best for most users.
-
Updated communication protocols for wide-reaching, impacting changes.
- Used websites, GW Status, digital signs, printed signs, and other departments' communications, such as facilities and the GW Transitions Committee, to help spread the message.
- Changes in communications provided more notice and increased transparency.
- Enhanced network reliability through the completed replacement.
- Replaced and upgraded academic technology across campuses.
- GW IT has been developing a 6-year lifecycle management plan to modernize technology in over 700 spaces across all GW campuses.
- Expect to see more information on this plan throughout the next year.
- This summer, 36 classrooms and conference rooms were given full technology upgrades and over 200 had at least one component upgrade.
|
As we begin the 2024-2025 academic year, we continue to develop the GW IT roadmap. To learn more about ongoing IT initiatives and all the work our teams put in during FY 24 you can check out our IT Annual report.

| Banner Modernization Will Synchronize Grades between Blackboard and Banner |
GW IT continues to work with the GW community and Ellucian to modernize Banner (our Student Information System and Human Resource system) by migrating it from on-premise servers to a Software-as-a-Service solution (Banner SaaS).
A big focus of the project is process improvement and improved customer experience. The project team has been working diligently on the Banner (GWeb) integration with Blackboard. This integration will allow grades entered in Blackboard to be synced with Banner, eliminating the need for Faculty to log in to Banner to input grades. We will keep you updated as we pilot this with courses this semester.
As this project progresses, we want to hear your concerns and feedback. For more information on this transition throughout the project, visit our Banner Modernization page.

| Tableau Has Moved to the Cloud |
The Business Intelligence team has been working for several months on migrating 300+ dashboards from GW's on-premise Tableau server to Tableau Cloud. The migration, which covers different business areas such as Academics, HR, Finance, and Research, will be 100% complete by mid-August. The move to Tableau Cloud allows GW to take advantage of Tableau's advanced features; gives GW a modern analytics environment that’s trusted, secure, compliant and always available; and aligns with GW IT's long-term strategy to minimize environmental impact by reducing our carbon footprint.
