The Harlem Quartet Comes to YoungstownWe are excited to welcome the New York-based Harlem Quartet to Youngstown on Thursday, January 17, at 7:30 pm as part of the YSU’s Cliffe College of Creative Arts and Communication Donald P. Pipino Performing Arts Series. The Quartet will be performing in the Ford Family Recital Hall of the DeYor Performing Arts Center in downtown Youngstown. The mission of the Harlem Quartet is to advance diversity in classical music, engaging young and new audiences through the discovery and presentation of varied repertoire that includes works by minority composers. The Quartet is currently serving a three-year residency at London’s Royal College of Music, and has been praised for its “panache” by The New York Times and hailed in the Cincinnati Enquirer for “bringing a new attitude to classical music, one that is fresh, bracing and intelligent.” In addition to performing on chamber music series around the world, Harlem Quartet has collaborated with such distinguished performers as violinist Itzhak Perlman, Ida Kavafian, cellist Carter Brey, Paul Katz, clarinetist Anthony McGill and Paquito D’Rivera. The Harlem Quartet collaborated with jazz masters Chick Corea and Gary Burton on the album Hot House, a 2013 multi-Grammy Award winning release. More information about the Harlem Quartet is available at harlemquartet.com. Tickets for this performance are available at DeYorPAC.org or by phone at 330-744-0264.

2019: WYSU-FM's 50th Anniversary Year!
The official date of WYSU’s 50th anniversary is October 23, 2019, but the celebrating starts way before we get to October. As a matter of fact, it begins this January 17th as we co-sponsor a concert with the YSU Cliffe College of Creative Arts and Communication featuring the Harlem Quartet. It is part of the YSU Pipino Performing Arts Series.
There will be plenty of information about all the concerts, lectures, and events we are bringing to the community as we go forward through the next 15 months (it is too big of an anniversary to be contained in just 12 months). Here are a few highlights: Comedian Paula Poundstone will be back in Youngstown on May 17th; Mad about the Arts has moved to September 27th, and will be more fun, and less cold, than ever; we are planning a spectacular member party for October (TBD); and we are working on bringing in a notable NPR figure for a talk in November or December. The celebration continues into 2020 with a performance by the Harlem Dance Theater on February 20, 2020, co-sponsored with the YSU Cliffe College of Creative Arts and Communication. There will be many more celebratory activities throughout the entire WYSU listening area from January 2019 through March 2020.
Please join us throughout the next 15 months for magnificent concerts, stimulating lectures, and other exciting activities honoring the past and moving into the future of your local public radio station, 88.5 WYSU-FM.
