Influenza vaccination requiremenT for
college students (Updated Registration)
October 20, 2020
Dear Student,
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has announced that all full-time undergraduate and graduate students attending any college or university in-person within the Commonwealth are required to get an influenza vaccination annually.
The state's new vaccine requirement is an important step to reduce flu-related illness and the overall impact of respiratory illness. It is especially important this year during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a result of this new policy, all in-person Tufts students must receive the flu vaccine or must be approved for a medical or religious exemption by December 1 each year. This policy will take effect this year and apply to students enrolled in-person this fall and this spring. (We also encourage off-campus and remote-only students to be vaccinated this year, to protect their own health and the health of those around them.) Students currently remote but planning to return for the spring semester must get the flu vaccine or they will not be allowed on campus.
Accordingly, in-person students are required to receive a flu vaccination and provide documentation of their vaccination to Health Service by November 19, 2020, for the 2020–21 influenza season (July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021), unless either a medical or religious exemption is provided. We expect the number of exemptions to be very low.
To complete this requirement, students have three options:
  1. Receive the vaccine from their primary care provider or local pharmacy. Most health insurance plans cover flu vaccines at 100%. Then, submit documentation of your vaccine to Health Service via the secure patient portal before November 19, 2020.
  2. Participate in a flu vaccine clinic at Tufts in fall 2020. You can still register for the dates and details for these clinics provided below. These clinics will be different than flu clinics in the past given the increased numbers of students who will need vaccination as well as the restriction of a global pandemic making it impossible for the Health Service to provide that service. Clinics will be done onsite by CVS Caremark and they will take your insurance card and bill directly for the vaccination.
    1. Appointments are required in order to receive your flu vaccine. You must schedule your appointment at least 24 hours in advance via the unique link provided for each date below. The registration site will close 24 hours prior to the clinic start time.
    2. No walk-in appointments will be allowed, and you cannot cancel or reschedule the appointment once it is made. However, if you must miss your originally scheduled appointment time, you may walk in at another time on the same day.
    3. Please bring your insurance card with you to your appointment.
    4. Please bring your student ID card to send your flu vaccine compliance record to Health Service.

  3. Apply for a medical or religious exemption by completing the immunization exemption request form and uploading it to the Patient Portal.
A table with the Massachusetts immunization requirements for the upcoming academic year can be found at www.mass.gov/doc/immunization-requirements-for-school-entry-0/download.
We encourage students to get their flu shots as soon as they can and not wait until the November deadline in order to meet the new flu vaccine requirement. The flu can come early and given the coronavirus and its symptoms, we would like to ensure students are protected as soon as they are able to get a flu vaccineeither through a local pharmacy, primary care clinician or the flu clinics offered above.
