NEW VIRGINIA TECH ALUMNI CHAPTER AT WARM HEARTH
To say that our residents love Virginia Tech would be an understatement. Many of our residents attended, taught or have some kind of connection with the University. And that’s why Alumni are moving back to Blacksburg, to be close to all the opportunities that living in a college town provide.

We have always had a strong relationship with the Virginia Tech Alumni Association, and recently formed our own chapter. One of the first chapter events was the NCAA announcement pep rally at Cassell Coliseum. Our members enjoyed special seating and were part of the announcement that aired live on national television.

For more information or to join, contact Ellen Rorrer at 540-443-3465.

FITNESS CENTER TESTIMONIAL

Kathy Westfall is a resident of Warm Hearth who has found a renewed sense of hope and motivation since she joined the fitness center here.  She wants to encourage other residents and the community to discover all it has to offer.

Kathy is recovering from a foot injury and needed some extra help to regain her fitness and achieve her ultimate goal of being able to walk wherever she wants, including small sections of the Appalachian Trail.  She routinely participates in Arthritis Aquatics, Tai Chi and Rock Steady Boxing as an assistant for her friend with Parkinson’s disease.  Kathy needed an extra push toward her goal.  She reached out to Kenny Harrah, Fitness Director and they developed a plan that includes weights and a cardio equipment routine.  “I felt very welcomed and accepted by Kenny and his staff.  I have lost 22 pounds and have seen a steady increase in my endurance.  I’m making my way toward my goal and feeling better every day,” she says.

STEVE'S SUSTAINABLE LIVING TIP
For years, my family and I used a lot of plastic storage bags for packing lunches, storing leftovers, storing spices, etc. We also noticed that, over the course of a year, we used quite a few styrofoam containers for leftover food when we went out to eat.

We researched and tried some reusable glass and plastic containers and found one that works well. The containers come in various sizes, are microwave and dishwasher safe and have tight-fitting lids that do not leak. Now we pack our lunches, leftovers, spices, block cheeses, etc., in these. We also take a few with us when we go out to eat for leftovers.

Now instead of plastic storage bags being a normal grocery purchase, we are able to use them very sparingly and try not to use them at all.

Sustainably,

Steve Watkins, Production Manager
