SMPA HIGHLIGHTS

A NOTE FROM FRANK SESNO
Dear SMPA Students,
I serve on the High-Quality Undergraduate Education Committee at GW and we are currently soliciting the input of students as we work to craft a report in response to the charge issued by President LeBlanc and the Board of Trustees.
I would also like to invite you to the next Town Hall that this committee will be hosting on Tuesday, October 29, 2-4 P.M. in the Marvin Center Room 310

At our first meeting, the committee discussed the meaning of a “high-quality undergraduate education” and came up with some descriptors. These include:

It is rigorous and inquiry-based
It emphasizes creativity and intellectual curiosity; higher-order thinking skills
It empowers students to chart the path of their learning
It builds communities of learning (in and out of the classroom)
It enables students to develop personally as well as intellectually
It embraces evidence of learning sciences and is up to date with modern pedagogies
It adapts to a changing world and to the production of new knowledge
It is collaborative and equitable

We also identified four broad areas that are likely to be of central concern to our committee (this list is not exhaustive):

1. #Only@GW STEM: How do we find innovative ways of doing STEM at GW? How do we innovate by building on our strengths and existing resources?
2. Academic advising and student success: How do we support students in their time at GW?
3. Leveraging GW’s location: How do we draw on our unique location to enhance educational opportunities?
4. Academic innovation: How do we ensure that students learn what they want and need to learn in a context in which new knowledge is constantly being produced? How do we eliminate barriers to their educational goals and aspirations?
I invite you to email the committee with ideas and suggestions. Please use the email below, and use the subject line of your email to indicate the area your email addresses. Feel free to submit multiple emails this way. This labeling will help us sort through and record your valuable feedback efficiently and accurately.

UndergradEdGWU@gmail.com

Please be aware this is not an anonymous means of sharing feedback. That said, we strongly encourage emails that identify students by year, school, and major.
Since we are under a tight timeline, we ask for this feedback at your earliest convenience.

I greatly appreciate your time and thoughts on this matter,
Frank Sesno
Director, GW School of Media and Public Affairs

SMPA Students Contribute to Washington Post Story
Four GW students contributed to a Washington Post story, published in the newspaper’s front page on Monday, about the children left behind by the opioid epidemic in West Virginia.
Students Kelly Hooper, Shayna Greene, Halle Kendall and former student Arianna Dunham worked with former SMPA professor Debbie Cenziper to report on the crisis, which has displaced thousands of West Virginia children whose parents are struggling with addiction. Cenziper is a contributing reporter at The Washington Post.
