Positively
Hello, Fellow Dog Lovers!
Spring is officially here! I'm looking forward to some warmer weather and more time spent outdoors. One of my favorite pieces of advice I give pet parents is to try to do something with your dog each day to give them physical and/or mental stimulation. Go for a walk, play fetch, learn a new trick! The possibilities are endless, especially as nice weather moves in.
Don't forget that we've just opened up registration to our second Dog Trainer Course that begins soon, so if you want to learn to be a dog trainer, please consider joining us and learning from me live and in person!
In this edition of the Positively Newsletter, you'll find a tribute to a very special dog who recently passed away, training tips about tugging, and more.
As always, throughout this newsletter you'll find exclusive content and training tips that you won't find anywhere else. Hope you enjoy!

Tugging
Tugging
Positively Contributor Bobbie Bhambree discusses tugging and how it can help sport dogs as well as pet dogs.
There are many great articles already written on how to teach tugging, how to keep tug drive, and the benefits of tugging in agility. Rather than repeating what has already been written, I’m going to talk about my experience with my dog, Tricky.
Tricky is a 12 pound terrier mix. She is now 5 years old and has been with me since she was 8 weeks old. Up until Tricky was a year and a half, she had pretty good tug drive. Tricky tugged as a puppy, but she didn’t come with built-in, insane tug drive. I had to build upon it through a variety of games.

When to Adopt
When to Adopt
Jennifer Kachnic of The Grey Muzzle Organization discusses how you can know you're ready to adopt a new dog.
If you are like most people, you will eventually decide to get another dog after yours has died. This is a personal decision and one that should be made very carefully. The entire family should be involved in deciding the best time to commit to a new relationship. The time frame for this is different for everyone. Bringing a new dog home to the family before everyone is ready can hurt someone by implying that the dog’s death is insignificant. You may feel that you loved your passing dog so much that you can’t bear the thought of bringing another dog into your life and going through the loss again.
Give yourself time. Try not to rush into making a decision until you have sorted out your feelings and grieved.

Harley
Harley
Harley, the 2015 American Hero Dog, has passed away at the age of 15.
Harley was an incredible advocate for puppy mill dogs and helped to educate the public about the horrors of the commercial pet breeding industry. Harley spent the first ten years of his life confined to a tiny cage inside a puppy mill, and after his rescue and adoption was able to help raise money to free more than 500 dogs from other commercial breeding operations. He leaves an incredible legacy that will certainly continue to inspire change. Rest in peace, Harley.

Deaf Dogs
Deaf Dogs
Positively Contributor Bernard Lima-Chavez of Dog & His Boy holds nothing back as he talks about ways people can be more understanding of deaf dogs.
For some pretty obvious reasons, living with a deaf dog is different than living with a hearing dog. There are safety and other considerations, but in the grand scheme of things, most are minor adjustments that we must make in our daily lives. Different, yes. Difficult, no.
That said, there are a few WTF moments when sharing your life lived with a deaf dog that are the complete opposite of awesome, experiences that deaf dog pet parents bond and commiserate over, and the cold hard fact is that it is usually YOU- people who don’t live with deaf dogs- that drive us to drink.

Top Tip
TOP TIP
Tethered or chained dogs have a greater propensity to respond aggressively to an approaching person, even if that person is someone the dog knows, because chaining or tethering a dog for long periods of time causes excessive agitation, increased anxiety, and exacerbates aggressive response.
Do your dog a favor and keep him off of any chain or tether!
