[from the vpsa]Though we all know the value of exercise for our bodies and minds, motivation can be hard to find. For me, after spending the entire day staring at Zoom screens, curling up in a warm blanket on the couch feels all but inevitable. When the last thing you want to do is exercise, a recent New York Times offers the following tips:
- Don't think of it as exercise: think of it as recess and have fun and play. Play basketball, go for a walk, or do chair yoga. Research suggests that even 22 minutes per day of moderate-intensity exercise can make a difference;
- Bundle your incentives: tie other rewards to your exercise regimen, such as listening to music you love or visiting a vista you appreciate;
- Make exercise a priority: think of exercise as important, rather than optional;
- Be flexible: realize that simple choices throughout the day, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator or going the long way instead of taking a short cut, can add up;
- Get support: Studies find that feelings of community are strong motivators for people to stick with healthy choices. Find others who enjoy the kinds of activities that you do and spend quality time with them as part of your routine
