The June Edition | June 8, 2026

Welcome to the June Edition of the Comfort Connection!

June is Aphasia Awareness Month, so in recognition of that, we've gathered resources to help you (and your loved ones) learn more about  aphasia, communication strategies, and available supports. Together, we can help raise awareness and better support those living with aphasia.
People with aphasia have a communication barrier. This means that talking and understanding including the ability to communicate opinions, feelings, thoughts and emotions is hard. This has a devastating impact on human connection – the ability to interact and have conversations with people. Without the ability to participate in conversation, every relationship, every life role and almost every life activity is at risk. Conversation is core to the ability to participate in virtually every realm of adult life. The result is often loss of self-esteem and profound social isolation. Reading and writing are often also affected which makes aphasia even more challenging.

Recipe of the Month: Cowboy Caviar

Cowboy caviar, also known as Texas caviar, is not just another salsa recipe. This fresh, chunky dip is full of black-eyed peas, black beans, bell pepper, onion, tomato, and jalapeño for a kick of heat. It can be whipped up in just 15 minutes, or you can make it ahead of time to give all those delicious flavors a chance to meld. Video: Spreading the word can change lives

These unscripted videos are of real people actually living with aphasia who have the courage to share their stories – what it’s like to feel afraid and alone in hospital – through the challenges of returning home and back to their community. This emotive video will show you what people with aphasia know but often have difficulty conveying.

What we have been up too...

The team at Comforts of Home - Care laced up their walking shoes and got their steps in last month in support of the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba. As a major sponsor, we walked in honour of those living with dementia and the families who support them across Manitoba.

It was more than just a walk — it was an opportunity to come together, show support for one another, raise awareness, and enjoy some fun along the way.

Self/Family Managed Care

Did you know? Manitoba offers Self and Family Managed Care to eligible home care recipients!
This program offers money in exchange for home care services, which can be used to hire a care company such as Comforts of Home – Care. By going this route, not only do you have a say about who comes into your home, you can ensure consistency and quality of care.

Joke of the Month

An elderly man was stopped by the police around 2 AM and was asked where he was going at that time of night.

The man replied, "I'm on my way to a lecture about alcohol abuse and the effects it has on the human body, as well as smoking, and staying out late."

The officer then asked, "Really?  Who's giving a lecture this time of night?" The man replied, "That would be my wife."
