Student Affairs Colleagues,
I look forward to seeing many of you at our monthly Divisional meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, February 8, in Risa Commons on the South 40. At 8 a.m., light refreshments and breakfast items will start. The formal agenda begins at 8:30 a.m. This month’s agenda features an update on the new FERPA rules, QPR and Kognito training timelines, and new staff announcements. We will wrap at 9:30 a.m.
We’ve already had many celebrations in 2023, including robust programming from the CDI, record numbers for students and employers at the Spring 2023 Internship & Job Career Fair, huge wins over conference opponents by our athletic teams, and more. I encourage you to continue collaborating with one another and sharing our diverse range of programming opportunities with students — there truly is something for every student looking for their sense of belonging and connection at WashU.
There are many great tools, initiatives, and resources outlined in this month’s eNewsletter. Make sure to read thoroughly - including our events section!
Finally, the application process opened last week for The Pershing Fellowship in Non-Profit Leadership. This is a paid summer internship program offered by the WashU Career Center. Pershing Fellows will be matched with summer internship roles at non-profit organizations in the region and will each receive a $10,000 summer stipend. Applications close at 5 p.m. on Friday, February 17. More here. Please distribute this to students your office works closely with. Questions can be directed to Tyler Gahrs.
Warmly,
|

Connect with Students over a Meal |
The Division of Student Affairs is providing up to $50 for staff to connect with a student or group of students over a meal. The goals of the program are to create a sense of engagement and belonging for students through our professional staff by establishing new points of connection; to provide an opportunity for students to be mentored by our Student Affairs staff; and to gain insight into how students are doing. There are three important notes to share:
|
- Please choose a student you have not previously connected with and do not supervise as a student worker
- This is currently only for the spring 2023 semester
- You must list the name of the student(s) you plan to have a meal with on the application

Remember "the Compton Effect" from high school physics? The Compton Effect is named after former WashU Physics professor Arthur Holly Compton (who would later become our 9th Chancellor). Compton did his pioneering research for this discovery in Eads Hall right here on the Danforth Campus. Next time you are walking through that building, take note of the plaque in the hallway commemorating the groundbreaking research he conducted in that very space. Compton is one of 26 Nobel Laureates who have been affiliated with Washington University, many of whom did a significant portion of their award-winning work at the university.
