Final thoughts from a fellow mom
A couple of weeks after graduation, Karl and I traveled to Boulder, Colorado, and then Cedar City, Utah, to visit with alumni, donors and leaders at other universities. We had a tremendous trip, and we made it even better by extending it for a few days to see a few of our country’s national parks out west. We hiked through both Zion National Park and Grand Teton National Park, and we went fishing in Yellowstone National Park. We also had the opportunity to see Old Faithful for the very first time. We wrapped up the trip by flying through Minneapolis, spending the evening there, and visiting with one of our students and her mom.
Our sons, Nicholas and Thomas, are both doing well. Nicholas is a graduate of Indiana Tech’s MBA program, and he took full advantage of the resources our Career Center provides to help land a job in Pittsburgh. (Please encourage your student to use Indiana Tech's Career Center, too!) Nicholas is now working at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) in health care administration. He is also going to continue working at a bakery part time on weekends from time to time—this was a job he picked up to help make ends meet while he was job searching. He loves the people there and, of course, the “sweet” benefits that come with working at a bakery!
Thomas just completed his first year of graduate school at Columbia University in New York City. He’s adjusted well to life in the Big Apple. This spring he worked as a math teacher at an all-girls Catholic high school in the Bronx. The commute was a bit grueling from the upper-west side of Manhattan. He took a bus to a subway station, and then took the subway to the Bronx changing trains midway. All told, the trip would take him an hour if everything was running on time. He is excited to be taking a new job in Manhattan this fall, as the commute will be much easier—about a 20-minute subway ride from his apartment!
Karl and I are looking forward to spending some time with Nicholas and Thomas later this summer when we spend some time at the beach in North Carolina followed by a camping trip in Pennsylvania. I hope you also enjoy quality time with your students this summer. Please let me know how you are doing when you get a chance, and please reach out to me if you or your student need anything.
