Dear friend of SMRI,

The year 2023 has just sped past. After the experiences of the previous years, it seems like a miracle that there were no disruptions to the events and programs we had planned. I am delighted by what we have achieved this year — it has been both playful and profound, ranging from fundamental research by our visitors and affiliates to engagement with the public. We enticed the public to engage with mathematics in our teaching spaces, and we discussed mathematics in public spaces such as the Sydney Town Hall and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

If you were to ask me about this year’s highlights at SMRI, I would find it difficult to answer. They arise from the environment we create and continue to build on, the environment in which creative and profound ideas develop and are communicated. Below the fold, we have curated some reading and viewing material from this year’s new content. I hope it will provide some insights and stimulation for new questions.
