Honorary Degree Recipient - Senator Avel Gordly
Monday, June 5, 2017 from 3-5pm, SMSU Multicultural Center 
This event, open to the campus community and community-at-large, recognizes the achievements of honorary degree recipient Senator Avel Gordly. Senator Gordly served as a faculty member in the Department of Black Studies at Portland State where she mentored and educated students. An alum of Portland State, this event honors her many contributions to the department, university, community, and the State of Oregon.

Black Studies has a Student Peer Coordinator!
If you have been in Pan African Commons or in class with her, you will see the De'Zhane McClyde has an infectious smile and the desire to learn! De'Zhane will not only be working on meeting students interested in the Black Studies major and minor, but she will be sharing information on different events that the department has planned for the remainder of the academic year. Expect to see her visiting your classes during the Fall 2017 registration perod!  












PSU Black Studies students present at conference 
Cleopatra "Cle" Odell (2nd from right) and Tascha Johnson (center) presented at the Pacific Sociological Association annual conference held in Portland in April. Both students were enrolled in Dr. Jackson's BST 419U: African American Women in the U.S. course and presented research papers written for the course. 

We're Going to Cuba!
Dr. Shirley A. Jackson and Dr. Pedro-Ferbel-Azcarate received an Internationalization Council Grant through the Office of International Affairs to build a study abroad program in Santiago de Cuba. Both professors have travelled extensively around the island and want to share that experience with students. Keep your eyes out for news on the program we hope to begin offering in 2018!     Join local artists Cleo Davis and Kayin Talton Davis who have been collecting stories, memories and histories from Black community members. Their artwork is now complete and ready for installation. We hope that this project will serve as both a visual archive and an inspiration for future community efforts.

    Senator Avel Gordly will be an honorary degree receipient at PSU's commencement ceremony on June 18th. In advance of this honor, we recognize the contributions she has made to Black Studies, PSU, the local community, and the State of Oregon.
