CONSCIENCE AND THE CONSTITUTION is an award-winning documentary that tells the little-known story of the organized draft resistance at the internment camp at Heart Mountain, Wyoming, during World War II. In 1944, the United States reinstituted the draft for eligible Japanese Americans -- including those who had been sent to concentration camps. While most reported, as they believed doing so would eliminate any doubt as to their loyalty, some resisted, declaring that they were ready to fight for their country, but not until the government restored their rights as citizens and released their families from the camps.
Sixty-three resisters at Heart Mountain were tried for draft evasion in a "mass trial," and seven leaders of the resistance effort and a newspaper reporter were tried for conspiracy to counsel draft evasion. Through their eyes, the audience sees into the heart of the Japanese American conscience and a debate that is still alive today.
The one-hour film will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Judge Denny Chin featuring Judge Kiyo A. Matsumoto, Kathy Hirata Chin, and Professor Thomas Lee, and by a reception.
