Dear Student,
Every five years, the academic leadership of Tufts School of Arts and Sciences and the New England Conservatory of Music review the status of the joint degree program in which you are enrolled.
In the review conducted this summer, Tufts has decided that the class that entered the program this September will be the last.
While our partnership has been successful over the years–and graduated some of the most academically and musically talented students at both institutions–we have found it increasingly challenging for students to navigate the differing academic calendars and curricula of the two institutions. After careful consideration, we feel focusing on separate degree programs in the future will improve the overall student experience.
Tufts remains fully committed to supporting the arts. This decision will enable us to focus our admissions resources on future cohorts of students who wish to study within our Department of Music.
Please be assured that the suspension of future admissions to the joint NEC/Tufts program will have no impact on students who are currently enrolled in the program. You will have the full support of both institutions. You will be able to complete your degrees with the full support of faculty and staff in both Tufts.
We recognize this news may come as a bit of a shock. Please join us for an information session on Thursday, November 9, 9 – 10 a.m. in Room 730A in Dowling Hall. We will answer your questions during the session and hopefully address any concerns you may have.
With best wishes,
James M. Glaser
