| Highlights from the CAFE Conference and the Keynote Address
The first annual Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence Conference, held on May 18, 2022 in the UMKC School of Education, was well attended. Thank you to all of you who participated in the day: facilitators, presenters, panelists and attendees. It was wonderful to see and talk to colleagues that we've not seen in person for such a long time!
The keynote address for the conference was held following the awards and recognitions ceremony later in the day. Todd Zakrajsek, PhD, delivered the address titled, "Reimagine, Reinvest, and Reinvigorate: Finding the Strength to Teach so Others May Learn" and focused on multiple ways to capitalize on the strengths and new skills that both faculty and our students have gained during the pandemic.

Interview with Dr. Diane Mutti-Burke, Professor of History
1) Thinking back on the last few years as a faculty member at UMKC, what accomplishments are you most proud of?
Throughout my career at UMKC, I have focused my energies on generating new scholarship on the history and culture of this region and sharing it with broad audiences, which has led to published volumes of scholarship, websites, public conferences, and workshops for teachers. I also am extremely proud of the many UMKC students I have taught and mentored throughout the years, many of whom have pursued research topics focused on the history of this region.
2) Can you give one example of how your research informs your teaching and/or service?
I am fortunate to live and work in the place that has long been the focus of my research. My scholarship explores the history of slavery and the Civil War in Missouri. I regularly bring my research into the classroom because I have found that students are interested in learning about the community in which they live. I also am frequently asked to share my research with public audiences and consult with cultural institutions on projects and programs related to the history of this region.

Interview with Professor Xanath Caraza, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
1) Thinking back on the last few years as a faculty member at UMKC, what accomplishments are you most proud of?
A significant accomplishment has been for me to promote the diversity of U.S. Latinx and Latin American cultures and the Spanish language at our University through my teaching. It has also been a pleasure to have my students publish original pieces of writing in Spanish in the Baladí, the literary journal housed in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
2) Can you give one example of how your research informs your teaching and/or service?
There are multiple ways in which my research has informed my teaching and service, which involve the many bilingual books of poetry and fiction I have published. I am the curator and co-organizer of the annual Día de Muertos/Day of the Dead Poetry Reading and Celebration at The Writers Place in Kansas City. In addition, I have recently been invited to present my most recent book of poetry La mariposa de Jackeline/Jackeline’s Butterfly at the 2022 Rio Grande Valley International Poetry Festival and The Humanities Research Center at Lycoming College in Pennsylvania.
