Tufts Student Life
SCHEDULE AN ADVISING APPOINTMENT BY JUNE 15
JUNE 5, 2018
Hello Combined Degree Students!
We would like to congratulate you on your acceptance and decision to join the Combined Degree program at Tufts University. We are really looking forward to speaking this summer and working with you when you arrive on campus this fall.
First, let’s introduce ourselves. We are Leah Gadd, the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Advising at the SMFA at Tufts and Robin Olinsky, an Associate Dean for Undergraduate Advising on the Medford campus. Leah oversees the academic life of all undergraduate students on the SMFA campus and serves as the primary academic advisor for BFA students. Robin is responsible for academic advising for Liberal Arts students with last names starting with P-Z and all Combined Degree students.
Please review the following information regarding advising, course selection, and your academic program. We will meet (either in person or virtually) over the summer to discuss your degree requirements and course selection for the fall. Once you arrive on campus in late August, you will finalize your course registration as part of your orientation programming.
In the meantime, please do the following:
  1. Sign up for an in-person or virtual advising appointment in June or July no later than June 15 (appointments are available beginning June 13th) via go.tufts.edu/robinolinsky. Choose "Combined Degree Advising Appointments." When you book your appointment, please let us know if you prefer to meet in person or by phone. For phone meetings, we will send you the information to call in at our scheduled time. If none of the offered times work for you, please be in touch with us as soon as possible.
  2. Please remember that Fall 2018 is the first of 10 total semesters that you will spend in the Combined Degree program. We will ask you to build a schedule for Fall 2018 that includes 2 studio courses and 3 non-studio courses. Combined Degree students are most successful in this program when they make progress towards both degrees at the same time.
  3. Review the studio course offerings available to you through the course search option on SIS. You can do so in the Course Search screen by selecting the “BFA Studio Art” attribute. Have 2-4 choices of studio course options that are of interest to you in advance of our advising appointment.
  4. For your non-studio courses, we recommend that you take English 1 and a foreign language class, either continuing your language study from high school or choosing a new language. The third non-studio class can be an art history course or any other course of interest to you, including in your potential major department.
  5. Familiarize yourself with the SMFA faculty and their work.
  6. Familiarize yourself with your program requirements: BFA requirements and BA/BS requirements.
  7. Choose one work of art that you have made to discuss at your advising appointment. Please send an image (JPEG) to Leah.Gadd@tufts.edu in advance of your advising appointment.
  8. ENJOY YOUR SUMMER!
Best,

Leah Gadd
