MESSAGE FROM FERNE MOSCHELLA, PRESIDENT & CEO
As I write this message, the Federal Government’s COVID-19 precautionary measures have just been extended through April 30, Governor Northam has issued a "stay at home” order, there are now confirmed positive cases in the New River Valley, and Warm Hearth Village continues to close ranks in our ongoing efforts to keep our residents and employees safe from an outbreak.  During this time of tremendous fear and uncertainty, we at Warm Hearth Village are striving to remain vigilant, to maintain our positive spirit, and to stay calm and focused on the task at hand.  We are so thankful for the outpouring of support from our Warm Hearth community and from our friends in the greater New River Valley, who have sent notes of encouragement, donated supplies, groceries, and cash to help meet the needs of our Village, or simply let us know that they’re thinking about us.  And we are thankful to be surrounded at Warm Hearth Village by the beauty of nature in all its spring splendor, enhanced by the careful planning of our founder, Dr. Wybe Kroontje.
I have never before experienced a time when leadership was more important than it is now.  I am so proud of the Warm Hearth leadership team for their proactive planning and preparation, thoughtful communication, and step by step approach to reducing risk to our Village.  More than anything, I am proud of the teamwork that I am seeing between and across all areas of our Village, the sharing of resources, ideas and advice, and the care and concern that we continue to show one another and of course, to our residents.  May this spirit of teamwork, sharing, and true cooperation continue long after the COVID-19 pandemic has ended.
HUCKLEBERRY CAFE TO GO
We're still up and running! Phone payments are accepted and no-contact, curbside pickup is available at the front entrance to the Village Center.

MASKS NEEDED
Warm Hearth Village is home to nearly 600 seniors age 60 and older. In preparation for the onset of COVID-19 in the US, we began our efforts to procure necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for our health care staff. Despite our rigorous efforts to locate and purchase N95 masks for use in our health care facilities, to date we have been unable to find a source for these vital supplies. We are asking that anyone in our community in a position to help make a connection for these masks reach out to us with information. Please call Kevin Sands at (540) 443-3456 if you can help. Thank you for your assistance in this urgent endeavor.
TAKE A VIRTUAL TOUR
Even though our Village is closed to visitors at this time, we are still here to help you - literally and virtually.  Our website, retire.org is an excellent resource for information about all of our living options, services and amenities.  Though there’s nothing like experiencing Warm Hearth Village and all its natural beauty in the springtime, we do offer a virtual look at the Village that will allow you to get a feel for our campus and all it has to offer.  Visit our living options tab to discover more.

We are still taking admissions for Showalter Center and Kroontje Health Care Center with stringent screening practices.  Applications for our independent living opportunities are also available online.  Please reach out to us if you have questions or would like to learn more.

EXERCISE FROM HOME WITH THE FITNESS CENTER
Whether staying active at home involves yoga in the living room, running up the stairs or weighted arm exercises with soup cans from your kitchen, there are plenty of ways to keep moving even when you can’t get out. The Warm Hearth Fitness Center has made yoga, stretching and Rock Steady Boxing videos to help keep you moving. More videos are being added each week. Click these links to view them on our YouTube channel or our Life Enrichment Facebook page.
FOUR CORONAVIRUS SCAMS TO AVOID
Scammers are quick to exploit emergencies to cheat people out of money. Follow and share these tips to ensure you or your loved ones do not become their next victims!

  1. Beware of fraudulent products claiming a cure. Remember, there are currently no approved vaccines, drugs or investigational products available to prevent or cure the virus.

  2. Don’t give money to charities you don’t know. It’s very easy for anyone to set up an account on crowdsourcing platforms to request support from the public.

  3. Hang up on impostor callers like The IRS or someone offering relief checks. Never provide your personal information as these agencies will not call on the phone.

  4. Be wary of new investment opportunities. A biotech company you’ve never heard of is working hard to develop a vaccine for the Coronavirus. If you buy company stock now, you’re sure to get a windfall when the markets go up, right? If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
EMPLOYEE  EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE FUND
We have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support we’ve received during what has been a challenging and unsettling time for us all. Many of you have asked how you can continue to help not only our residents but also our staff in the days and weeks ahead. Your gift to our new Employee Emergency Assistance Fund will help provide financial support to Warm Hearth employees and their families who face financial challenges. Likewise, your support of our Micah’s programs will help us continue to provide assistance to our low-income residents who need help purchasing basic items such as food, personal care items, and pet food. To make a difference today, please click the Donate Now button below. Your support is deeply appreciated.

STAYING ENGAGED FROM HOME
The effects of social distancing have many of us feeling, well, a little stir-crazy. Broaden your horizons with this list of engaging activities.

  • Click here for a list of virtual tours. "Walk" through some of the world's most prestigious cultural institutions, like The Met and The American Museum of Natural History, then go for a "ride" on Disney's new Frozen rollercoaster. And regardless of your age, we think everyone will enjoy some live footage of pandas playing at the zoo!

  • Volunteering online is a fun way to do good for others right from your home. Options include supporting projects at the United Nations, assisting the Smithsonian Institute, or helping people in need at the Crisis Text Line.

  • Take your learning to the kitchen with some easy and FUN cooking videos online! Cooking with Sonny is not only entertaining to watch, but he makes it simple to follow along.

  • Have a front-row seat at your favorite Broadway performance by streaming BroadwayHD.

  • Clean out your closets, basement or garage. If you have unwanted items to donate, consider saving them for the Treasure Trove, our nonprofit thrift store! Once it is safe to do so, we will gladly accept your donations. This is a great way to help raise money for seniors in need of housing and health care.

HOME CARE SERVICES TEMPORARILY NOT ACCEPTING CLIENTS
The closing of local schools and universities has impacted our staffing and our ability to provide home care services, (care management, companion care, medication management and personal care) to our clients at this time. Many of our home care employees are students or parents of students who will now need daytime supervision. Until such a time as everyone resumes normal activities, we will not be accepting new clients for home care services.

Home health services, (skilled nursing, rehabilitative therapies, and home health aides) are not impacted at this time. Our clinicians can provide these valuable services to seniors who may otherwise not be able to safely leave their homes to receive this treatment or care.

We are still accepting new admissions for home health clients and will provide updates if that changes with the anticipated arrival of the COVID-19 virus in our area. If you have questions or need assistance, please call our office at 540-443-3428.

WALNUT POINTE PROJECT ON HOLD
The Warm Hearth, Inc. Board of Directors voted to put the Walnut Pointe project on hold at their last regularly scheduled meeting on March 12th. The decision regarding the new independent living apartment homes resulted from slower-than-anticipated sales fueled in part by concerns of a looming recession, the upcoming transition in leadership of our organization and most recently, the upheaval of our society and economy surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the period of transition as current Warm Hearth President and CEO, Ferne Moschella retires later in 2020, the board and Warm Hearth staff will work alongside her successor to study the project and research opportunities relative to its development and the overall development of additional independent living residences to address demand.

We appreciate the continued support and interest of our residents, staff, board, and community in this project and in the future of Warm Hearth Village. Your input into our planning and research is invaluable and we will keep you informed as we move forward.
