Hey, y'all, from Bama!
The Senior Golfers returned to the Robert Trent Jones Alabama Golf Trail and were welcomed with true Southern hospitality, and by three challenging but spectacular golf courses. Many dogwood and azaleas were in bloom in the Prattville/Montgomery countryside, and the SGA members enjoyed exploring the small town.
The event began with a drinks and dinner at the pleasant and comfortable Marriott at Capitol Hill. The comment, "Have mercy, I've died and gone to heaven," was heard in the dinner buffet line regarding the authentic Southern cooking. Everyone was welcomed and details for the event were discussed.
After the three sunny days of golf, SGA Heart of Texas event winner Charlene Gideon again took first place for the ladies. "These courses were beautiful and very, very challenging," said Charlene. "My teammates had to help me out. Also I called on the calming powers of an adult beverage on the course. The Senator, Judge, & Legislator were quite the experience!"
Winner for the men was SGA Veteran Bill Cembor. "These courses were some of the most difficult I have played," said Bill, adding that he wants to 'impeach the Judge (course).' "An added attraction was our own aerial show by the Blue Angels," said Bill. "They flew over us on the golf couse. Then, as Janie Risley and I came back from the course, as soon as we got out of the car, they flew down in unison and almost touched us with their wings. It was thrilling!"
Mary Bailey and Jeff Leech also were honored winners. Low Gross and Low Net winners took home gift certificates, as well as hand-worked cutting boards by Alabama artist Aaron Coleman, who processes old growth logs recovered from the rivers of Florida. Aaron's work can be seen at oldriversawmill.com.
Runners-up were Sue Arnold and Sally Maloof. Close to pin winners were Mary Bailey, Bill Cembor, Kim Comstock, and Joanne Evans. Winning Best Ball team was Mary Bailey, Charlene Gideon and Karen Otis. Second place went to Sue Arnold, Kim Comstock, and Jeff Leech. Appreciation prize went to Susan Jordan. Congratulations to all!
Special thanks goes to Charlie McDonald, Golf Director, and to the excellent golf staff at Capitol Hill. SGA will return to the Alabama Golf Trail in April of 2025. Plan to join us!
