Stay Alert for Acute Flaccid Myelitis in Late Summer and Early Fall

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued a Health Update urging providers to stay alert for Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM) in late summer and early fall. AFM typically presents as sudden limb weakness, usually in children, and can lead to permanent paralysis. While current activity is low, providers should stay vigilant for potential increases in enterovirus D68 respiratory disease and suspect AFM cases, and consider polio in patients who may be under-vaccinated or unvaccinated.

Providers should contact Public Health within 24 hours by phone if a patient is identified with/suspected to have AFM. Additional reporting information can be found on the Los Angeles County DPH AFM webpage.
