Dear Cathedral Family,
Zeal. The Holy Cross Core Value we are highlighting this year is perhaps a little-known and misunderstood word. To help with that, here is what Holy Cross founder Blessed Basil Moreau had to say about zeal:
“Zeal is the great desire to make God known, loved, and served, and thus to bring knowledge of salvation to others. Activity flows from this virtue. Teachers who possess it fulfill the duties of their profession with enthusiasm, love, courage, and perseverance.”
With a great desire to make God known, loved, and served, and hearts full of devotion for all Cathedral students, we diligently prepare for the 2024-2025 school year. As “opening day” approaches, I am excited to share with you that we have a roster full of incredible educators who have enthusiasm, love, courage and perseverance. As Blessed Basil Moreau envisioned at the start of each school year, we are prepared to make this year our best year yet.
We also continue to honor the words of our Vision Statement by continually striving to be “the Catholic high school of the future” while maintaining and cultivating our Catholic and Holy Cross traditions.
To do this, we place high value on our ability to innovate and collaborate. I am happy to share that we will introduce a new model for integrating our Mission this year. We have hired a highly qualified, and yes, a person full of zeal, to be our first full-time Chief Mission Integration Officer. Matt Gring is his name and comes to us with tremendous credentials. A so-called “triple-domer” (three degrees from the University of Notre Dame), he has been a Catholic school leader and most recently worked for Marian University.
As the CMO, Mr. Gring will collaboratively oversee all of our programming to ensure that our Catholic and Holy Cross values are infused throughout the campus. One of his primary responsibilities will be to ensure that our good foundation in the area of Inclusivity and Diversity will continue. In particular, Mr. Gring will incorporate a team approach to this work by having four other educators a part of this team. Cathedral is blessed with academic, socio-economic, geographical, religious, and racial diversity. With roughly 40% of our students this year identifying as students of color, Diversity and Inclusivity have never been more important to us. Mr. Gring has already reached out to some of our friends in the community to continue many of the current programs, and he will work to develop new initiatives.
Moreau makes it clear that this is the work of our Mission and that each and every student is a unique and special child of God:
“If you show them greater care or concern, it must be because their needs are greater and because it is only just to give more to those who have received less…seeing in all only the image of God imprinted within them like a sacred seal that you must preserve at all cost.” – Christian Education
I also ask you to pray for Matt Gring and his Mission Integration team. We will soon announce the members of this team, but please know this: ensuring the implementation of our Mission is the joyful privilege of everyone on the Hill. We expect all of our educators to be kind, joyful, collaborative, innovative, engaged, and engaging, with an extraordinary zeal to make God known and loved and served and to be great at their job. These are high expectations, and we lean into these norms with sincerity and consistency. Ensuring that all of our students are known, loved, and challenged is what we pledge to do this upcoming year.
In closing, I want to share one more quote from Bl. Basil Moreau; “Educators do not simply follow what is generally accepted in the profession but have a thousand little ways to encourage progress in even the weakest and least-talented students and challenge all students to their highest performance.”
May God bless us in a thousand different ways in 2024-25, and may God bless each and every member of our faith-filled community.
With zeal and hope,
Rob Bridges, PhD
President
