From the Office of the Dean |

Happy Monday! I hope that this CHDCM newsletter finds you rested and refreshed—and ready for the second half of the Spring semester. Given the rains last week, I’m hopeful that this is the “in like a lion” that precedes lamblike weather at the month’s end…
I spent Spring Break traveling with my SHU colleague Jonathan Hogan to meet alums of our programs in North and South Carolina, and I return to campus a bit tired, but also energized by these conversations. We met alums who graduated in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, as well as the early 2000s, and what stood out to me was just how much excitement these amazing, accomplished folks had over what’s happening here at The Hall—and how eager they all were to share their experience and expertise with our current students. I was really overwhelmed by their Pirate Pride—and that was before our big win over Villanova, and taking care of DePaul!
But, for all of us, the end of break also marks the point where we start thinking about what’s next—the flowers that will soon appear all around us, registration for the Summer and Fall semesters, the beginning of Daylight Savings Time (I hate the “spring ahead,” truth be told), the Spring equinox, the return of warm weather, and the impending arrival of both Passover and Easter later this month. Given the recent men’s basketball wins, it’s also tempting to start peeking ahead to the NCAA tourney and dreaming of multiple victories….
That said, I would encourage us all to avoid looking too far ahead, and to instead keep focused on what’s around us right now—including our classes resuming today, the kickoff of the Big East Tournament, the Mass and Ceremony commemorating those members of our community lost in the Boland Hall Fire, as well as all of the events that are continuing in celebration of Women’s History Month. And a hearty Ramadan Kareem (Have a generous Ramadan) to all those beginning their monthlong observance today!
With that, I invite you to read on, and enjoy the good news and shout outs from our CHDCM community as we head into the second half of the semester. As always, keep your good news and event notes coming, and I hope each and every one of you has a wonderful return to campus life!
