Happy Monday—as the CHDCM newsletter returns to its regularly-scheduled day for the first time this semester!
I hope that this finds you all well, and that you’re enjoying the slow return to normal-ISH winter temperatures. Hopefully, you survived the terrible cold with a minimum of damage/hassle, and are looking forward to temperatures in the 40s (!) in the coming days.
I’m also writing this the day after the Super Bowl! It was a Seattle defensive masterpiece, and perhaps not great television—but the most important part was that our College was onsite in Santa Clara all week long, thanks to our Pirates in the Field experiential learning program! Thanks to B.J. Schecter, the Executive Director of our Center for Sports Media, Joe Morales and Jack Pine had a once-in-a-lifetime experience covering the Big Game—you can check out the story below for more details and learn more about this fantastic program! Meanwhile, other CHDCM students were working for NBC Sports as the Winter Olympics kicked off—lots for us to celebrate!
Today’s edition also marks the first newsletter of Black History Month, and so I want to encourage you to check out the events happening University-wide—which was inaugurated by President Gerald Ford in 1976, which means we’re also celebrating 50 years of Black History Months! We’ll keep celebrating our amazing, diverse community throughout the year, especially during national heritage months, and will highlight CHDCM events connected to them in these newsletters, as we go forward.
With that, I will stop and let our articles take it from here. As always, I hope you will read on, and enjoy the good news and shout outs from our CHDCM community. Keep those news & notes coming, keep on checking the forecasts, and have a great two weeks of classes!

Membership is based upon attendance of general council meetings, held on the first Monday of every month, as well as tech involvements (which can range from attending shop hours, working crew for a production, or another specific accommodation).
