The Monks for Peace are welcomed by a crowd of thousands at the South Carolina State Capitol

2300 Miles for Peace, Unity & Kindness

Many of you probably are aware of the Monks for Peace walk which has been going on for several months. Of course we are an organization for golf and for seniors, but once in a while a special event merits a newsletter for our great audience.
The monks set out from Fort Worth, Texas, on October 26. Their path has taken them through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia. Their goal is to reach Washington, D.C. on February 10.
Their stop in Columbia, South Carolina, was on their 77th day. SGA members Nonie Price and Tina Rubenstein, along with Colleen Albright and other friends from Cynthia's church in Myrtle Beach, were among the thousands in attendance to hear the monks' remarks at the state capitol building. Everyone seemed to come away with a newly inspired feeling of peace.
Brenda Nichols, a cousin of Nonie's daughter-in-law, hosted the monks at her family's event venue. She reported that they have a very large support team traveling with them who cook meals and launder their two sets of clothing. The monks sleep on mats on the floor. A group of local doctors, nurses, and massage therapists visited them when they arrived at their destination in the evening.
The big news for everyone that day was that Aloka, their dog, was visited by a vet and medical team, who checked on his torn tendon and gave him red light therapy! Aloka was to have surgery and hopefully to be back walking with the monks soon.

The 78th day was through Cynthia's small home town of Fort Mill, South Carolina, and then they were on to Charlotte, North Carolina. SGA Director Catherine Powell was out early in the morning and although she did not plan it, she was in the right place at the right time to see them walk by just one block from her apartment in Charlotte. Catherine's writeup is below.

Hello, SGA members!
The monks walking for peace from Texas to Washington, DC, were coming through our city, Charlotte, NC. I had been casually following them the past couple of days but didn't really know exactly where they were. There have been maps out trying to track them, but no one really knew their exact location.

I happened to be out early this morning, and just a block from my house I saw there were people starting to line the street. I thought, hmmm, I wonder if they're waiting for the monks to walk by.

It was really, really cold here that day, but bright and sunny, plus it might be the monks! So I decided to walk back out there and spend just a little time, certainly not all morning, waiting to see them.

Five minutes after I got to the main road near my house, the funniest and most amazing thing happened. I saw police cars right up the street, and sure enough, the beautiful and peaceful monks were walking right behind them. It was a moving and incredible experience. Their presence is indescribable. I felt completely peaceful and inspired and wanted to share it with the Senior Golfers!!
