NYU Google Workspace Storage Changes Are Coming in December
A message from:
Donald J. Welch, Ph.D., VP for IT and Global University CIO, and
Jeff Capuano, Associate Vice President, Global Infrastructure and Operations
Dear NYU Community Member,
As noted in our previous email, Google announced that they will no longer provide free, unlimited storage to educational institutions. As a result, during the week of December 22, NYU will introduce new storage limits for Google services for all employees, students, and affiliates. Once these new limits are imposed, existing and new files, emails, and photos will count towards your designated storage limit.
What Does This Mean for My NYU Google Storage?
Here’s the good news: 95 percent of the NYU community falls within the new storage limits and the changes won't disrupt your daily activities at all. However,
individuals near or above 20GB will temporarily be provided with extra storage and contacted during the week of December 11. NYU IT will support these users to ensure everyone has ample time to adapt, and that storage alternatives are identified. You can
check your current storage usage anytime.
Please know we are committed to ensuring the NYU community has adequate storage space to accommodate their professional needs, while allowing room for growth too.
What Should I Do Now?
While there is no immediate action required, you can consider these
helpful clean-up tips for managing your storage. Identify any files or emails that you may no longer need or that can be safely deleted in accordance with
NYU's data retention policy.
What Are My Options?
Throughout 2024, NYU will introduce alternative storage solutions tailored for data sets, larger files, or files that are rarely accessed. These solutions aim to enhance your workflow and improve your overall business practices. We will share updates as we develop these offerings and you can always
keep an eye on the Google Workspace Storage project page for more details.
Where Can I Find Out More?
If you have any questions or concerns, please see
the project website or
contact the project team. Stay tuned for further updates as we work together to adapt to these changes.
Thank you,
Donald J. Welch, Ph.D.
