Clackamas County Newsletter for Multifamily Property Managers
Summer/Fall 2019
Your quarterly guide to successful recycling & waste reduction
from Clackamas County's Sustainability & Solid Waste Program
Summer Event Season
We have been taking advantage of the warm, dry (mostly) weather to partner with multifamily communities throughout the county. Let us know if we can do the same for you. Some examples include:
  • Table at community events
  • Conduct door-to-door outreach about recycling right
  • Give a presentation about preventing food waste
  • Update stickers and signage in your recycling area
  • Provide outreach materials to share with residents
  • Assist with service level changes
This edition of the e-newsletter contains reminders and opportunities for your community. You are welcome to use any of the contect in your own community newsletters. Let us know if we can help improve your recycling program or provide you with free resources
Do you manage communities outside of Clackamas County? See our list of regional multifamily contacts throughout the tri-county area who are ready to help with your waste prevention, reuse, and recycling efforts.
A Few Reminders about Glass Bottle and Jar Recycling
While much of our recycling is "commingled" (or "mixed" together in one bin), our glass bottles and jars get recycled separately in their own bin. It's important to ensure glass recycling is available at your community. This keeps our mixed recycling free of glass shards and protects the equipment and workers at the sorting facility. As long as we recycle right, glass is easily recycled right here in North Portland!
And remember, we can only recycle glass bottles and jars - no lids, no corks, and no other types of glass. Drinking glasses, plates, window glass, mirrors, etc. belong in the trash as they melt at different temperatures than the bottles and jars, and can cause the recycled glass to become weak and shatter.
If your community doesn't have glass recycling, contact your collection company to have the service added. We can also help with these conversations if you need us. If you need better signage for your glass recycling, contact us today.
Request a Food Waste Prevention Presentation Today
Learn how 40% of our food (and 25% of our fresh water) is being wasted. And more importantly, learn how small changes to how we buy, prepare, and store food can help save money AND the environment. All participants who commit to taking steps to save their food from being wasted will receive a reusable produce bag.
To request a presentation or to learn more, email or call us today at 503.742.4451.

Recycle or Not: Plastic Bags and Plastic Wrap
Plastic bags and plastic wrap (like the wrap around your toilet paper and paper towels) should never go in your mixed (nor glass) recycling bins. They cause big problems at the recycling sorting facility. If you want to recycle them, you can take them to a participating retailer (Safeway, Fred Meyer, etc.); otherwise, they belong in the trash.
Have other questions about whether something is recyclable or not in Clackamas, Multnomah or Washington counties? Question no more! You can now post a picture of an item in question to Recycle or Not on Instagram, and Metro will let you know in which bin the item belongs. Thanks for doing your part to recycle right!

Tap into Cash with Your Electric Water Heaters
Join Terrene at the Grove, Stoneplace Apartments, Village at Main Street, and Sundial Apartments in upping your cash flow while doing something good for the environment. Portland General Electric has a unique energy program just for multifamily communities to boost sustainability and lower costs. You can earn $20 annually for each water heater you enroll, and your residents get digital access to Chinook Book Coupons.
For Brad Hamilton, senior property manager at Village at Main Street Apartments, the decision to participate was easy.
"There is no cost to the property, and we can essentially reduce the carbon footprint of the property because of the smart technology the program provides," Hamilton said. "The annual rebate was a win for the property owners, and it was a quick and seamless installation process. There was not one complaint from any resident in over 232 units."
To learn more, visit www.portlandgeneral.com/claheaters, email waterheaters@pgn.com, or contact a program representative at 888.987.0976.
