Roughly 13 million people travel to Great Smoky Mountains National Park every year, more than double the visitation of the second most popular park, the Grand Canyon. Aside from the Smokies’ obvious appeal—waterfalls, wildlife, greenery as far as the eye can see—the park straddles two states, Tennessee and North Carolina, making it accessible and drivable for much of the country’s population. But what if you want to visit the Smokies and avoid shoulder-to-shoulder tourists? There are plenty of peaceful jumping-off points outside of the park’s main heat map. Here’s where to find them. —Kristin Luna, G&G contributor

Art on display at the Historic Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival.

FALL IN BLUFFTON: There’s something about autumn in the Lowcountry. Situated on the May River, the town of Bluffton, South Carolina, is an ideal place to experience this stunning season, especially during the Historic Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival, October 14 through 22. Throughout the lively street fest, sample locally harvested seafood at oyster roasts and shrimp boils. Then peruse the work of more than one hundred artists, spread across an open-air gallery, as you take in the natural beauty beyond. Plan your Bluffton escape.

Miami. White sand, aqua waves, and bright green palms are only the start of what makes Miami magical. From the peaceful shores of North Beach to the thumping bass of South Beach and everywhere in between, Miami offers whatever type of vacation you want to have. For me, the city’s gems are beyond the beaches:

World-class art galore. The arts are everywhere in Miami, starting with the legendary Art Deco architecture. Even outside of the annual Art Basel fair in December, there are plenty of ways to experience the scene. Visit the Pèrez Art Museum to see new works by some of the country’s most daring artists, including Bisa Butler, Calida Garcia Rawles, Mickalene Thomas, and Kehinde Wiley. Next to the Pèrez is Maurice A. Ferrè Park, where sculptures by Costa Rican artist Maestro Jiménez Deredia create an outdoor museum. For a glimpse at the future of art, stop by Artechouse for an immersive digital art experience. The Miami location celebrates a different Pantone color every year, and 2023 is the “Magentaverse.”

Beachfront food. For Cuban food, I love the yuca, empanadas, and Ropa Vieja at Versailles and Havana Vieja. Flatbreads, sandwiches, and salads shine at the city’s beach clubs, including the popular and pristine Nikki Beach. After a light lunch, splurge on an upscale dinner at Ocean Grill at the Setai where the short rib agnolotti and truffle risotto are delicious.

Designer shopping. Miami is one of my favorite places for a girls’ shopping trip. From the latest hype brands like KITH on South Beach to the Versace flagship store, it’s the perfect place to find your next unique piece. Those looking for high-end designer brands will find them in Miami Design District, where Alice + Olivia, Celine, and Gucci are all in one place. Since shopping always works up an appetite, end the day with the paella at Gloria and Emilio Estefan’s restaurant, Larios on the Beach.
