Escalation of violence in Idlib could be deadly for children, UNICEF warns

(UNICEF) – A further escalation of fighting in Idlib, northwestern Syria, will put the lives of more than 1 million children at imminent risk, UNICEF said today. “Thousands of children in Idlib have been forced to leave their homes multiple times and are now living in overcrowded makeshift shelters, with food, water and medicine in dangerously short supply,” said Henrietta Fore, UNICEF Executive Director. “A fresh wave of violence could leave them trapped between fighting lines or caught in the crossfire, with potentially fatal consequences.” Link

It Is Urgent to Address Grave Violations Against Children in South Sudan

(OSRSG-CAAC) – At the conclusion of a four-day visit to South Sudan, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Children and Armed Conflict, Ms. Virginia Gamba, highlighted that grave violations against children in the country remain at unacceptably high levels, with close to 1,400 children verified as having been directly affected in 2017 and thousands more bearing the brunt of the conflict. Security forces in the disputed region of Kashmir haven’t used those to police demonstrations since 2010, when they fired on protesters and killed 112 people. International outcry followed, prompting the Indian […]

Lost childhood: Boko Haram victims gripped by thoughts of revenge

(Al Jazeera) – The field is wide and scorching under dry midday heat. Dozens of children kick up the sand underneath their sandals.  Their shrieks echo as they roll their heads back in carefree laughter. They’re playing, but not with toys or balls. They are playing a game called “Boko Haram versussoja (soldier)”. Link
