Written Brief:
One in three Americans have a criminal record, restricting their ability to get housing, education, and a job, thus punishing them long after they’re released from prison.
Clean Slate aims to seal criminal records to help millions rebuild their lives. With just two weeks before state legislators were slated to vote on the issue,
Mark the Time was born - a powerful mural hand-painted by a formerly incarcerated New Yorker, reappropriating tally marks (used to count time in prison) to illustrate the injustice and imbalance incarcerated people face after they’re released. Because a conviction record shouldn’t be a life sentence.
