Announcement of the New Director of the Honors Program

Dear NJCU Community,

I am happy to announce that Dr. Reed Carroll, Associate Professor of Biology at New Jersey City University (NJCU), has been named the new Director of the Honors Program at NJCU.

Reed has been a member of the Honors Program Committee since 2021. He joined the faculty at the university in 2013.

Dr. Carroll succeeds Dr. Esther Nir in leadership of the Honors Program. Dr. Nir led the program from 2022 before being appointed the new Interim Dean of the College of Professional Studies earlier this month.

Prior to NJCU, Reed served for nearly 13 years in the Dominick P. Purpura Department of Neuroscience at Albert Einstein College for Medicine, first as Assistant Professor from 2001-2007, before being elevated to Associate Professor in January, 2008.

At NJCU, Dr. Carroll has been actively involved in developing programs that enhance student success. He has directed several grant-funded activities that boost career readiness, organizing career skills, and awareness workshops, and has developed a career-preparation course. He has overseen an ongoing student mentoring program.

Reed is committed to supporting the practice and expansion of research at NJCU, promoting student involvement in independent laboratory research. He has coordinated research presentations at the NJCU STEM Research Symposium for 10 years. Research in the Carroll lab centers on the mechanisms regulating inhibitory synapses in the brain with the aim of providing insight into disorders associated with altered excitation in the brain including autism and epilepsy.

Dr. Carroll received his B.A. in Cell Biology from Cornell University, and earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Harvard University. He completed postdoctoral training in neuroscience at UC-San Francisco and Stanford University.

We are sure he will provide exemplary leadership for this pivotal academic cohort. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Reed Carroll for this well-deserved appointment. He can be reached at rcarroll@njcu.edu.

Sincerely,

Dr. Donna Adair Breault

Interim Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs
